Ears is one of the feral cats that I've been feeding
since Summer 99. Feb. 2000 when I started my Feral Cat Project.
He was the 4th cat I took to my Vet to be neutered,  shots
and needed veterinary care. That was April 2000. Since that time
he's  become very friendly with a friend of mine that lives
close by. Within the last month Ears started getting where
he would be waiting for me to bring the food out. When my garage
was opened he would be inside. He was allowing me to pet him and
and he acted like he wanted attention.

Sept 4, 2000 I noticed  he was was in need of veterinary care.
I was able to get him in a cage and took him to my Vet. He was
treated for ear problems and I released him on Wed Sept 6,2000
7 hours later he was back at my house and he  injured his
left ear and it was bleeding. I took him back to the Vet for
more treatment and this time 2 stitches were needed on his ear.
I knew  that I wanted to give him a real home and hoped he
would adjust to living indoors. Ears is 5 to 6 years old and
is a street wise cat. He weighs about 15 pounds and is all muscle.

He stayed in a spare bedroom the first  week and Emily, Molly
and Bustopher would come in to visit. He didn't seem to have a
problem with the other cats. Emily and Molly would hiss at him and
he chased Molly out of the room a couple of times. He was using
the litter box in his room. We let him out of the room Sunday night
so he could explore the house and showed  him where all the litter
boxes are. I thought that the litter box issue might be a problem.
I'm  happy to say he uses the boxes. I feel  that may be a natural
thing for a cat to do feral or otherwise. He is being nice to Muffin
my Yorkie. We were worried  as Muffin is so tiny. Ears is
a truly  remarkable cat to have lived that many years outside.
The difference that neutering makes is  evident in him. I know
he has  a mean look because of  his folded ears. I think his
ears give him character and shows, he is a survivor. The folded
ears are due to years of fighting and ears problems such as mites
and inflammation.

We have always called him Ears. He will never have to fight for
food or anything thing else ever again. Because once he joined
the Smurgles Gang it's  a lifetime membership. He seems very content
to be here and is doing excellent. We are very happy to have him in
our home and welcome him as a family member.

Our dear friend wrote this whimsical poem for Ears.
Thank You, Grace

Ears

Ears my friend you've been wearing a hat
Not a thing wrong dear boy about that
One little thing , you forgot don't you know
To put slots in your hat so your ears will show
I hope it didn't hurt, cause you any pain
I'm afraid my Lad, they'll never be the same.

When you look at the shape of your ear
Anyone can see, its really very clear
You crammed the hat hard on your head
No slots, ears got flattened down instead.
It was a silly thing to do, why I ask you
Did you forget your ears, that can't true.

Never mind Lad , they look rather neat
Bet some would even think them sweet
You managed to get yourself a life inside
Never felt the need to run away and hide
You're a lucky boy Ears, be grateful Lad
There's many a cat out there feeling sad.
