Annually, 25 full-time students are recognized with a Dave Marshall Leadership Award. These students have made an outstanding extracurricular contribution to their academic program, to the campus, or to the greater community. They have demonstrated leadership, initiative, commitment, and an ability to motivate and influence others toward the betterment of Nipissing University.
This award is a prestigious, non-monetary award in recognition of the dedication and leadership Dr. Dave Marshall demonstrated during his 18 years of consecutive service as the Dean of Education and President and Vice-Chancellor of Nipissing University. Dr. Marshall’s tenure at Nipissing University is a reflection of his commitment to higher education, vision for the future, and leadership in external community service. These were all characteristics reflective of Dr. Marshall’s position at Nipissing University and are qualities embodied in the students chosen for this award.

To be nominated in the academic category, a student must have the potential to further pursue their area of study and possibly affect, or be involved with, cutting edge work that will result in the advancement of their discipline. This research or activity should be able to increase people’s understanding of, or interest in, the discipline. The student may also balance their academic demands with other services to the local or university community.

Master of Environmental Science
Before starting her?Master's?program, Ysabel completed her undergraduate degree in Environmental Geography here at Nipissing University. She received the J.W. Trusler Proficiency Award and the Canadian Association of Geographers Undergraduate Scholarship upon graduation. In her final year of undergraduate study, she was also awarded a Higher Education GIS Scholarship from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI Canada).??
Ysabel is currently a full-time graduate student and lab instructor. Backed by an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, Ysabel is working on a research project collaborating with the North Bay Police Services. The project examines how environmental variables, like temperature and light conditions, may influence the distribution and occurrence of various types of crimes in North Bay. Ysabel has already presented the preliminary results of this research at the Canadian Association of Geographers - Ontario Division's annual conference and through a poster presentation at Nipissing University's Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Day.??
As a summer research assistant, Ysabel contributed to investigations involving the mapping of tropical forested wetland losses in the Niger Delta, and wetland changes along the Northern Coast of Australia. She also contributed to a joint project mapping historical land-use change for the Dokis First Nation. While completing a literature review for the project, Ysabel discovered several important historical documents that have changed our current perspective on the cause of some of the earliest changes to the reserve.??
Ysabel has also volunteered her time as a Library Assistant for the North Bay Regional Health Centre, a Scout Leader for youth aged 11 to 17, for Nipissing University's Open House, and for the Geography Department's GIS Day.??
After graduation, Ysabel hopes to continue in her lab instructor role at Nipissing University and dedicate her time to giving back to the city of North Bay. She also plans?to pursue a Ph.D. in Geography.?
Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the Scholar-Practitioner Program
Since his first year, Connor has worked as a research assistant supporting two major projects in the Nursing department. The first project focuses on researching students' awareness of, and competency with incorporating, the best practice guidelines set by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO).? As part of this project, Connor has been responsible for data collection and organization as well as sharing the RNAO's set of recommendations with his peers. Connor is passionate about communicating the profound impact that an evidence-based approach has on practice, patient outcomes, and quality of care.?
The second project focuses on studying practice readiness of new nursing graduates to identify and analyze burnout, factors such as compassion satisfaction, patient load, self-efficacy, and participants' feelings of practice readiness. Through this project, Connor has shown leadership and initiative in delegating tasks and keeping the research team informed. He has coordinated meetings with co-investigators and maintained sole responsibility for communication with participants. His leadership has resulted in being invited to co-present a poster at the International Nurse Education Today and Nurse Education in Practice conference in Sitges, Spain alongside Dr. Louela Manankil-Rankin. The presentation will focus on the results of a School of Nursing study on practice readiness across all programs. Connor is also scheduled to present about the variables that affect practice readiness at the 2020 Undergraduate Research Conference.??
In addition to these roles, Connor is also volunteered as a student member of the University Health Network's (UHN) Clinical Learner Leadership Advisory Committee which provides students with the opportunity to share their perspective on educational and organizational planning while simultaneously strengthening their leadership skills. Committee members make recommendations to improve learners' experiences, participate in strategic planning and design sessions, contribute to organization-wide events, participate in committees, add their perspective in focus groups, and participate in leadership initiatives across various UHN campuses.??
After graduation, Connor plans to continue strengthening his clinical skills by collaborating with other health care professionals in a hospital setting. He also plans to pursue?Master's?program.?
Bachelor of Science Honours Specialization in Environment & Physical Geography
Kimberly has supported the Department of Geography's research first during her undergraduate thesis and then as a Research Assistant supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's Undergraduate Student Research Award. As part of this research work, Kim generated a model of high-frequency chloride concentration in streamflow as a part of a study on how road salt and dust suppressant are transported from the surrounding watershed to streams and lakes in Canadian Shield watersheds. This research, jointly conducted with researchers at Queen's University, is funded by a 'Best in Science' Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.??
Kim's contribution to this research is novel in that it examines a large dataset (monitored by the Ontario Ministry since the 1970s) to determine the human impact on streams over time. The high-frequency model used in this study is often applied in urban settings, but its application in a more rural, Northeastern Ontario context is novel. Given the significant environmental concern that road salt application poses to our lakes and freshwater ecosystems, Kim's research has a truly local impact.??
In 2019, Kim has also demonstrated her academic leadership through presentations at the Undergraduate Research Conference, and at the Canadian Geophysical Union Eastern Student Meeting at Ryerson University. She also contributed to two poster presentations for International Conferences, one for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Montreal and the other for the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting in San Francisco.??
Kim is resilient, courageous, and professional. She has shown excellent independent work and is continually developing her technical skills in data analysis, data management, programming and communicating her research in various forms.??

Brittney has demonstrated academic leadership through her research work and mentorship within Dr. Carré's Social Neuro Endocrinology Lab.?
While working on her undergraduate thesis project, Brittney demonstrated excellent critical thinking skills and strong motivation to conduct research. She presented her work on the effects of testosterone on mating psychology at the regional Undergraduate Research Conference, and the International Society for Behavioural Neuroendocrinology conference. In her Master's program, Brittney is currently conducting a research project funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Graduate Scholarship examining the effect of testosterone on physiological and behavioural processes among hypogonadal type 2 diabetic men.??
In addition to this, Brittney is also a second author on two research papers submitted to peer-reviewed academic journals. The first paper is based on her undergraduate thesis research showing that testosterone rapidly modulates men's mating psychology. For this work, she was responsible for subject recruitment, data collection, analysis, and critical edits to the manuscript. The second paper is an invited review paper of single-dose testosterone administration research in humans. For this paper, Brittney was responsible for performing a comprehensive literature review, creating a table detailing her findings, and formatting the paper.??
Brittney has emerged as a leader in the lab, training undergraduate students on proper data collection and recruitment methods and serving as an excellent role model for young trainees in the lab. She is motivated, driven, and always striving for perfection.??
After graduation, Brittney plans to apply to medical school with future aspirations to become a pediatrician or child psychiatrist. She also hopes to delve into research in the medical field.??

Lauren has demonstrated academic leadership as a Nursing Best Practice Champion, Peer Tutor, Peer Mentor, Secretary for the Nipissing University Nursing Society, Open House Representative, Undergraduate Research Conference Presenter, and Nursing Games Team Member.??
Lauren is a champion for nursing research, taking on a leadership role as a Best Practice Guideline Champion for a project sponsored by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario. In this role, Lauren acts as a voice for the implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines in the nursing curriculum and provides direction, guidance, and support to the student body with regards to the project.???
Lauren has sought out opportunities to develop her leadership and collaborate with others throughout her education. She collaborated with peers for the 2019 Nursing Games resulting in a Team Simulation Award. She participates in the Health Care Leadership Program at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, further developing her leadership skills through supporting the implementation of a physician peer-support program. She was named a HERlead fellow in 2014 and has been building on her leadership since that time.??
In 2018, Lauren was named as one of the Undergraduate Research Conference award recipients for her panel discussion entitled "34 Hours in the ER" examining the death of Brian Sinclair and the systemic racism affecting Indigenous peoples in Canada. Building on her cultural competency, Lauren took part in an Indigenous Inter-professional Cultural Safety Training where she learned about Indigenous approaches to health and wellness and participated in a culturally-based simulation that focused on identifying and addressing common barriers experienced by Indigenous people navigating the health care system. Lauren incorporates this learning and continues to build on her best practice competency?incorporation?during her Clinical Externship with the Mississauga Hospital Emergency Department.?
Lauren is collaborative, insightful, and highly knowledgeable. After graduation, she hopes to work in the emergency department at the North Bay Regional Health Centre as a Registered Nurse.?
Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice following the Criminology Stream
Grace's academic leadership is evident through her work as a research assistant for Nipissing University's Institute of Applied Social Research. Under the supervision of Dr. Gregory Brown, Dr. Jane Barker and Dr. Chris Greco, she has supported four Correctional Service Canada funded projects through conducting interviews with 28 federally sentenced persons in parole offices in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and British Columbia; transcribing the interviews; developing the coding matrices using NVivo data analysis software; coding the interview transcripts; and assisting in data analysis once coded. Her work is high quality, organized, and insightful earning her a place as a co-author on the reports.??
Currently, Grace is researching the mental health needs of older offenders, a topic that is of contemporary importance and reflective of a trajectory towards a successful career as a leader in research. She takes an active, energetic approach to her role as a research assistant and has demonstrated-ability to engage with research participants from diverse backgrounds. She received the President's Scholarship in 2016, the Carl Sanders's Scholarship in 2017 and the Nipissing University Alumni Association Criminal Justice Award in 2019. She was also invited to participate in a roundtable discussion with the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (Matthew DeCourcey) and our local Member of Parliament (Anthony Rota's) as a representative of the students in 2019.??
Grace balances her academic achievement and research work with her involvement on campus as Social Media Coordinator and Event Promoter for Alpha Phi Sigma's Mu Kappa Chapter and Vice President of the International Student Mentorship Program. She pursues every opportunity she can to grow her skills through certificate workshops and volunteer opportunities.??
Grace is conscientious and community-minded. After graduation, she intends to pursue a Master's program to continue her research into older offenders. In the future, Grace aspires to work for Correctional Services Canada as a rehabilitation officer.?
Bachelor of Arts with an Honours Specialization in Gender Equality and Social Justice
For the past two years, Sydnee has been a research assistant for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) funded Northeastern Ontario Research Alliance on Human Trafficking project. This research is being conducted in partnership with Nipissing University, Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre, the Union of Ontario Indians, and the AIDS Committee of North Bay and area. It maps patterns of exploitation and community resilience concerning sex trafficking in northeastern Ontario. As Research Assistant, Sydnee analyzes workshop discussions, surveys and interviews, and assists in writing research papers.??
Syndee is one of Gender Equality and Social Justice's most academically outstanding students. Her capacity for critical thinking, high-quality research, and originality of thought have been consistently demonstrated through her course contributions and research projects. Her honours??major research paper on neoliberal governmentality and female entrepreneurship was outstanding. She has a strong analytical ability to decipher, explain and interrogate difficult theory from interdisciplinary gender studies scholarship. During class discussion, Sydnee's willingness to break the ice inspires reticent students to contribute their thoughts and enhances everyone's learning experience.??
Outside of the classroom, Sydnee has volunteered her time to support faculty with the organization of International Women's Week, sexual assault survivors as an Amelia Rising crisis line volunteer, and local families as a respite worker for Community Living North Bay.??
Sydnee's compassion for systemically disadvantaged people and her deep sense of social responsibility for systemic injustices will continue to motivate her to use her education to make a positive difference in the lives of others.??

As part of Dr. Zhu's Software Engineering course,?supported by an NSERC Undergraduate Research Student Award,?Nathan filled the role of team lead over an experiential learning project which tasked students with creating an app for a local cab company, 5-0.??
Using his extensive knowledge in computer programming, Nathan was able to apply an E-CARGO model to aid in the development of a scheduling service platform for the North Bay company. Additionally, Nathan was responsible for communicating with the clients to ensure the app's design suited the needs of drivers, dispatchers, and end-users alike while keeping in mind local taxi bylaws and the importance of the app's ease of use. Once launched, the app will allow the company to streamline its workflow.?
As the team lead?for this?truly interdisciplinary?experiential learning project, Nathan supported his peers as they applied their software engineering skills to the real world.?The company's recognition in the human capital of students and the potential of a homegrown app has brought positive press to Nipissing University and its Computer Science Department.??
As a student volunteer for the Math Drop-In Center, Nathan has supported his peers one on one and in groups, helping them to improve their math and computer science skills. Additionally within this center, he has been the go-to student for physics support. Nathan uses his excellent communication skills to encourage students he supports to approach problems in new ways.??

Emerson is actively and meaningfully engaged on campus through her adherence to the team's rigorous training schedule. She is present and engaged in all training sessions, setting a high professional standard for the team. She always has a smile on her face even when training entails roller-skiing outdoors for 3 hours straight on a cold rainy weekend morning.???
Emerson has been a source of support for the Nordic Ski Team through what has been an emotionally challenging season. Her positive attitude, kindness, and empathy helped the team to cope with the tragic loss of a fellow teammate earlier this year. During this difficult time, Emerson kept open communication with teammates and coaches with regards to how everyone was coping. Emerson's leadership is evident through the way she has supported us all through this difficult time.???

Taylor has dedicated her time to Nipissing University throughout her four years of study. As a NUSU Crew Member, she volunteered to support Homecoming, student BBQs, the Santa Claus Parade, the NUSU Community Fun Fair and more. As Frosh Leader, Taylor took it upon herself to continually check in with her team even after Frosh week ended. She connected students to support services on campus and checked in to ensure students were accessing the supports they needed.??
Taylor is always ready to lend a helping hand to her peers and those in need. Whenever an opportunity arises to volunteer, Taylor is one of the first to sign up, no matter how busy she is with her course work. She is an advocate for Nipissing, committed and dedicated to the community's wellbeing. In addition to the roles already mentioned, Taylor also helped to organize the "Let's Talk About Concussions" event with Dr. Tator that took place this past Fall.??

Philip transferred to Nipissing University after completing the Environmental Technician Program at Canadore College. In the short time he has been here, he has taken initiative to get involved with a variety of Enji giigdoyang events and initiatives. He has taken on the role of Peer2Peer mentor, Wiidokdaadwin Volunteer, Welcome Powwow Volunteer, and was also hired to fill the role of Student Assistant for the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.???
In each of these roles, Philip has proven to be a reliable support person who takes initiative to identify where help is needed, action on implementing solutions, and ensures that events run smoothly. He is a positive presence within the Enji giigdoyang student lounge and a great role model for his peers. He contributes to creating a sense of community in the lounge by being present, involved, and respectful of Elders.??
Philip demonstrated his leadership at the Peer2Peer "Meet the Mentor" event by welcoming everyone, introducing himself, and encouraging other peer mentors to do the same. As a mentor, Philip makes meets with students weekly to answer questions and provide support. He also provides tours and attends events with his mentees.?
Philip is generous with his time and always looking for opportunities to help out. As Wiidootaadwin Volunteer he eagerly went to local high schools to lead activities and Indigenous teachings for students in the community. When the annual Christmas office decorating contest came around, Philip volunteered his free time to hand paint a mural for the office. He also took the lead on holiday activities and games for students in the lounge.??
Philip has a way of making everyone feel welcomed and included. It is remarkable how much of an impact he has had on the campus community in a short time.??
After graduation, Philip plans to pursue work in forest management either in Ottawa or his hometown, Maniwaki.??
Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the Scholar-Practitioner Program
Christina has demonstrated her campus leadership through her support of Nipissing University's aim to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO). To become a BPSO, the university has two years to implement the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario's Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) into the curriculum. Christina in one of a group of students dedicated to making this happen.??
Building on the work of previous guideline champions, Christina spearheaded peer engagement through her cohort's Facebook group, the creation of an Instagram page, and the creation of best practice guideline kiosks focusing on particular guideline areas.??
In addition to this, Christina also coordinated a global networking initiative among best practice guideline leads at other institutions including Ryerson, Conestoga, and the University of Calgary based in Qatar. As part of this initiative, students agreed to meet online for lunch & learns regarding how to effectively integrate the Best Practice Guidelines. As the main facilitator of these online meetings, Christina coordinated schedules and facilitated online discussions.??
Christina has also helped to engage first-year nursing students in becoming BPG champions themselves, motivating five new students to get involved. Survey evidence shows that the engagement interventions Christina implemented have increased students' familiarity with Best Practice Guidelines.??
Christina is a natural leader who continues to demonstrate a diligent work ethic and strong communication skills. In addition to her engagement with the BPSO, she also works two part-time jobs, is a research assistant, and competes as part of the women's soccer team.?
After graduation, Christina plans to pursue a Master's degree and hopes to gain further clinical and research experience to eventually become a Nurse who works on oncology clinical trials.?

Mandi has been involved on campus throughout her degree as a Biology Society Executive Member, Ontario Universities Fair Representative, Open House Volunteer, Biology Society President, Peer Mentor, First Generation Program Facilitator, Academic Success Program Assistant and as a Representative for Nipissing University on the Council of Outdoor Educators of Ontario.?
As President of the Biology Society, Mandi works hard to promote events and opportunities for students. She fosters positivity and goes out of her way to ensure all students feel welcome when they attend events. Recently, Mandi revitalized the annual Biology Society formal event. In addition to this, she spearheaded events such as the annual textbook exchange, Bio Octoberfest, Biology New Year's Party, Biology/Chemistry Thesis Nights, Charles Darwin's Birthday Presentation, Where Will Your Biology Degree Take You Presentations, a Zero Waste Presentation, and numerous fundraisers.??
As an Academic Success Program Assistant, Mandi supports students one on one and through group learning opportunities with academic skill development and goal setting. She is sought out by her peers for academic support and referrals to on-campus services.???
Mandi is also an accomplished academic and researcher who has held numerous awards including a Schulich Scholarship, two Carl Sanders Scholarships, a Talon Research Assistantship, and a Tembec Citizenship Award.??

After graduation, Mandi plans to travel and teach aboard before returning to Ontario to pursue a position as a secondary school teacher. She also intends to pursue a Master's degree.??

Daniel has been involved on campus as a Residence Don, Frosh Leader, NUSU Director-at-Large, NUSU Crew member, previous NUSU President, three-time Masters of Ceremonies for Nipissing's Relay for Life, three-time Masters of Ceremonies for Nipissing's Nursing Formal, and Residence General Council member for two years.?
From the time Daniel started at Nipissing University, he immediately wanted to get involved and began volunteering as much as he could. He has always been a positive influence on those around him, and constantly encourages students to get involved. As a Frosh Leader and NUSU Director-at-Large, Dan has shown consistency, passion and engagement. He often goes out of his way to ensure students are okay and often checks in with them. Dan is a great example of a student leader, especially to incoming students. He exudes positivity and Lakers Spirit.?

As Executive Director of The Equity Centre, Aidan is always looking for ways that Nipissing University can become a more accepting and supportive learning environment for students. Aidan and the Equity Centre Executive team work to?provide education and resources to the campus and community, advocate on behalf of students, and promote allyship on campus. This is accomplished in part by facilitating a safer space on campus, and by providing the campus community with educational opportunities. Aidan has been integral in developing a supportive atmosphere among students who access the Equity Centre and attend Equity Centre events.??
In addition to their role as Executive Director, Aidan is also the executive director of two of the Equity Centre's subgroups: Students of Colour United (SOCU) and AccessNU. Through these subgroups, Aidan has helped to create space for self-identified students of colour and students with disabilities. Through SOCU, Aidan organized a donation drive in support of refugee families in need during the holiday season. The drive was quite successful, and donations were shipped down to Matthew House Refugee Centre of Windsor. As part of AccessNU, Aidan hosted monthly ASL Coffee Houses to teach folks how to communicate in sign language thereby helping deaf and hard of hearing students feel more welcome on our campus.??
Aidan also created and facilitated multiple training sessions for Nipissing University faculty, staff and students. These training sessions were attended by faculty within the Nipissing University Faculty Association, Coaches and staff within the Athletic Centre, Frosh Leaders within NUSU, and?focused on topics such as gender, sexuality, students with disabilities, students of colour, and ways to be inclusive of all students. The training contributed to increasing?overall inclusivity on campus and equipped participants with the skills needed to work with students from a variety of communities.?
In addition to the above,?Aidan maintains a fulltime course load and works two jobs. They also volunteer within the Exercise Physiology lab, helping graduate students with their thesis work.??
After graduation, Aidan intends to pursue a Master's of Kinesiology with the ultimate goal of becoming an Athletic Therapist.??

Brody has demonstrated his campus leadership through his involvement as Residence Floor Representative, Open House Volunteer, New Student Orientation Volunteer, Best Practice Guideline Champion, Frosh Coordinator, Nipissing University Nursing Society Class Representative, Nursing Games Participant, Nursing Peer Mentorship Program Coordinator and Undergraduate Research Conference Participant.??
Brody also participated in self-development workshops including Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, Bringing in the Bystander, Consent+ and safeTALK. He was able to apply the skills learned in these workshops in his role as Frosh Coordinator, where he was responsible for leading and supporting a group of Frosh Leaders. In this role, Brody demonstrated how dedicated he is to creating a positive student experience. Whenever a Frosh Leader needed support, Brody would step up to provide a helping hand. His initiative and problem solving were crucial in supporting the success of Frosh Week.??
Brody has also demonstrated commitment to academics and supporting other students' academic success. He volunteered his time to coordinate the Nipissing University Nursing Society Mentorship program which helps first-year mentees develop personally, academically, and professionally with the support and guidance of an upper-year mentor. He also showcased his research skills at the 2019 Undergraduate Research Conference through his panel discussion entitled "Addressing the horizontal Workplace Violence experienced by Newly Graduated Nurses," chosen as one of the winners that year.??

Hannah is has been a passionate advocate for students throughout her time at Nipissing. Each year, she has become increasingly more involved and grown from volunteering as a Frosh Leader to filling the role of Vice President of Governance and Legal Affairs, and then NUSU President. In each of these roles, Hannah has kept her commitment to improving student life as her focus.??
Hannah has a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether at Open House, New Student Orientation, Graduate Student Orientation, or the Ontario Universities Fair, Hannah seeks out every opportunity to share her Lakers Pride with others. She is an excellent ambassador for Nipissing University when speaking with prospective students and supporters at events.? In her role as NUSU President, she represents the student voice at events, on the Board of Governors, on the Academic Senate, and various Board subcommittees. Over and above her course work, Hannah dedicates countless hours in service of students in this role.??
Hannah has also emerged as a leader in her program. As part of her Sports Marketing class, Hannah was elected Manager of Community Promotions for the 2019 Lakers Break the Ice on Mental Health fundraiser. In this role, she led a fundraising team, coordinated committee meetings, delegated tasks, and secured key sponsors. She took the initiative to design an incremental fundraising campaign and brought positive media attention to the event. Hannah's inclusive and encouraging leadership style inspired the entire class and was critical in helping the group reach its fundraising and awareness goals. The event had approximately 1,000 attendees and raised $9,000 in support of the Community Counselling Centre of Nipissing and NUListens mental health programs.??

She also participated in numerous self-development workshops including Mental Health First Aid for the Veteran Community, Bringing in the Bystander, Let's Talk About Consent, Gender and Sexuality 101, and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training.?
In her roles within Residence, Samantha's leadership is evident in the way she supports her peers. She works hard to meet them where they are and encourages them to get involved on campus whether that be through attending events, connecting with support services, or participating in training opportunities. Samantha stays up to date with what's happening on campus so that she can connect students with resources appropriate to them. She has also planned several large scale events including Dining in the Dark, Festive Feast, and Capture the flag.??
As a founding member and President of Alpha Gamma Phi, Samantha has been actively and meaningfully engaged in philanthropic initiatives with the sorority. In the three years that she was involved, the sisterhood raised over $6,000 for local charities. Samantha also volunteered her time as part of the Sexual Violence Task Force to help engage student leaders in a conversation about policy and procedure surrounding sexual violence prevention and education on our campus.??

As a member of Teacher Candidate Advisory Council Nicole is a voice for educations students and a liaison between the student body and administration, to advocate for the student perspective. To further build community among teacher candidates, Nicole created the Nipissing University Concurrent Education Students 2022 Facebook page where she posts reminders, deadlines, program updates and event notifications.??

Julianne has been an advocate for students in the Social Work Program through a number of roles with the Nipissing University Social Work Association (NUSWA). She has also been involved on campus as both a volunteer for the Nipissing University Alumni Association (NUSA), and a varsity athlete on the Ringette Team.??
Through NUSWA, Julianne participates in Social Work Department meetings, representing the voice of students in important conversations with faculty and staff. In these meetings, Julianne communicates student concerns, stress levels, and overall satisfaction with the program. When she was made aware that students were struggling with the balance of assignments and workload of the program, she brought the issue to the department meeting to be addressed. As a result, Social Work Faculty have adjusted deadlines to support and continue to engage in discussions about balance and workload with students in the Professional Years. Also at these meetings, Julianne has advocated for the university to make faster progress toward implementing accreditation requirements.??
Julianne has further supported her peers as Social Media Director and Event Organizer for NUSWA. In these roles, she plans events to bring social work students together and manages multiple social media accounts where she posts about events, professional development opportunities, volunteering, and self-care. When not volunteering for NUSWA, Julianne can be found supporting the Nipissing University Alumni Association's fundraisers and events, volunteering within the community, or playing Ringette.??

Eric has demonstrated community leadership in his role as a Cub Scout Leader for a group of cubs between the age of 7 and 10. In this role, Eric has displayed a remarkable ability to interact, teach, and motivate the cubs. He seeks out cubs who appear to be struggling with a task to support them until they reach a successful outcome. He is the first to volunteer to teach a new skill to the pack, proving to be a capable and confident scout leader.??
Eric shares the scout leader role with 3 other leaders, who he happily collaborates with. Eric knows when to take the lead, and when to assist someone else as they lead. He's always there with a smile ready to lend a helping hand. Recently, Eric took the lead on a Rocket building project. He brought in an expert guest instructor to teach the cubs what it takes to get the rockets to fly and maintain proper trajectory, helped support the rocket building activity, and arranged the rocket launch date for later this spring.
Eric also takes the lead in many of the Scout's outdoor camping and hiking trips. With his vast knowledge of camping and outdoor skills, achieved while obtaining his own Chief Scouting Award, he is able to pass on this knowledge to cubs and other scout leaders. He is also a qualified lifeguard which enables him to oversee all aquatic and water-based skills as the lead scouter in these areas.?
In addition to scouts, Eric is a leader within his church community. He is a Youth Delegate on the Board at Trinity United Church, leads retreats for the United Church of Canada, and has attended many youth conferences on Church Leaders.???
After graduation, Eric plans to continue is community service work as he pursues a career in Computer Science.??

Jetta's leadership is evident in her roles as Captain of the Women's Hockey Team and a community volunteer. She has volunteered at length with local hockey teams and at local schools. She donates her time to lead practices, motivate players, and encourage children who are just learning to play hockey. As a volunteer at Alliance Public School, Jetta helped support the Grade 5's Floor Hockey unit. She also volunteers within the classroom setting, helping students with their learning.??
Annually, Jetta takes a leadership role as a volunteer for the Girls Summer Hockey Camp. For the camp, local girls are invited to participate in a week of training led by the Women's Hockey Team. In addition to this, Jetta has given her time to support the North Bay North Stars hockey program for individuals with developmental disabilities. She has also volunteered for One Kids Place, and at the Downtown Christmas Walk.??
Jetta plays hockey with integrity and leads by example. She genuinely cares about the growth and development of young athletes and makes time to listen to them, support them, and encourage them to work hard on and off the ice. Jetta has inspired a younger generation of up and coming women to envision a future for themselves in a male-dominated sport. She has had a significant impact on the lives of young athletes, more than she knows.?

Ava has balanced her volunteerism with high academic achievement, receiving recognition as an Academic All Canadian for three consecutive academic years from FW16 – FW19. She also sought out self-development workshops such as “Making Sense of Trauma: Practical Tools for Responding to Children and Youth,” safeTALK, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s Commit to Kids training, and Mental Health First Aid.??

Olivia has been involved with Frontier College since her first year of university.? She has progressively taken on more responsibility and is an amazing champion of Frontier's programs. In addition to managing other tutors, Olivia has recruited, screened and trained new volunteers, led the executive team, represented the organization at community events, and celebrated the successes of many learners and tutors. She never hesitates to offer help whenever and wherever it is needed.? Olivia is a conscientious and committed volunteer who leads by example and is, in many ways, the "student ambassador" of our program, leading our executive team in recruitment efforts such as class presentations and residence promotions.???
?Olivia became a member of Frontier's executive team when she was in her second year, after joining as a one-to-one tutor the previous year.? A quiet but dedicated volunteer tutor, she took her executive responsibilities seriously, communicating regularly with her assigned tutors and ensuring they felt supported at the tutoring location. Since taking on an internship with Frontier College, Olivia has consistently sought new opportunities for personal growth, trying each year to learn something new that will result in new skills and new experiences. Jacob is working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Jacob has demonstrated his leadership in academics as a Tutor, Teaching Assistant for Anatomy and Physiology, and Research Assistant within both the School of Nursing and the Psychology Department’s Human Evolution Lab. Off-campus, Jacob volunteers with the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s Elderly Life Program, Youth Leadership Advisory Team and the Healthcare Leadership Program. He has also done fundraising for One Kids Place and has lobbied the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation to get involved in fundraising initiatives for Regional Aboriginal Mental Health Services.
As a Research Assistant with the School of Nursing, Jacob was involved with organizing data for incorporation into a Best Practice Guidelines document regarding clinical pain assessment and management. In the Human Evolution Lab, Jacob has been responsible for data collection for several novel research studies. He has completed literature reviews for incorporation into publications, assisted with difficult assays, and aided participants through complex protocols. His hard work has led to a lead authorship role on an invited entry chapter on hormones for the Encyclopedia of Evolutionary Psychological Science. Jacob is also a co-author of a submitted manuscript on a recent immune function study conducted in the lab.?
Jacob is personable, thoughtful, and kind. He freely gives his time to others whether through volunteering or aiding with research and he does so while maintaining an excellent GPA.

Trevor is working towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Specialization in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Education in the Junior / Intermediate Divisions.
Trevor has demonstrated leadership in academics through both his strong academic record and his various contributions to the Department of Mathematics at Nipissing University. In the summers of 2015 and 2017, Trevor worked as a Research Assistant for the department after receiving two NSERC awards. He also took on the role of Teaching Assistant, a role which he held for 3 years despite typically being reserved for upper year and graduate students.
Trevor further contributed to the department and institution by volunteering more than 200 hours over 4 years to the Nipissing University Math Circles program, educating children from grades 3 - 12. Through this program, he challenged students to grow academically. Trevor also volunteered his time to represent the institution at the Ontario Universities’ Fair and Recruitment Open House events.
Trevor balances his academic and extra-curricular work with ease. He sets high goals and standards for himself and achieves them. He is always willing to help others with their academic pursuits and his perspective is valued and sought out by his peers. Trevor's clear way of communicating has contributed to his success in the Math Circles program, and will no doubt contribute to his future success in either graduate studies or as a Math Teacher.

Ryoga is working towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Specialization in Biology.
Throughout his studies at Nipissing University, Ryoga has demonstrated his leadership in academics as a Chemistry Tutor, Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, Volunteer, and three-time President's scholarship recipient.?
Ryoga took the initiative to volunteer within the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Research Lab in 2017-2018 in order to learn the techniques employed in organic chemistry research to prepare for graduate school. While volunteering, he collected significant high-quality research results, which will lead to scientific publications. He is also currently working on a manuscript which will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
In addition to these research-related pursuits, Ryoga has also volunteered as an ambassador of the Department of Biology and Chemistry for the "You Be the Chemist Canada" Chemistry Competition which occurred on October 10th, 2018. He has also volunteered with the Nipissing University Ice Fishing Club, for a local retirement home and as a chemistry tutor helping students develop their skills.
Ryoga is an honest, energetic, hardworking individual. He always strives for excellence, which is evident in the quality work he produces both in the classroom and in his various research-related roles. Ryoga will undoubtedly find success in graduate studies in the future.

Taylor is working towards a Bachelor of Business Administration with a stream in Marketing.
Taylor has demonstrated her leadership in academics through her roles as a Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and Classroom Contributor. She has been involved with a research project investigating organic produce consumption patterns in Canada. This led to the acceptance of a co-authored paper by the 2019 Academy of Marketing Science World Marketing Congress Conference in Edinburg, Scotland. She has also successfully represented the university at the WinCan Ontario Project with The Knowledge Management Institute of Canada at York University’s, Lassonde School of Engineering. In this capacity, Taylor worked with academic and workplace partners to build a more innovative workforce in Canada by targeting post-secondary students and employees in the public, private, and social sectors.
Taylor is a three-time recipient of the Nipissing University Business Community's School of Business Leadership Award, nominated by her peers. She has shown leadership as Manager of Operations for the 2018 Lakers Break the Ice on Mental Health event, and at the 2017 Northern Ontario Business Case Competition at Algoma University. Taylor has also planned career development workshops for her peers on topics such as proper business resume writing, and networking skills. In these roles, she showed incredible creativity, a capacity to elevate her peers, and the ability to inspire others to achieve excellence.
After graduation, Taylor plans to return home to Ottawa to pursue employment in marketing.

Caleb is working towards a Master of Science in Kinesiology.
Caleb has demonstrated his leadership in academics through a variety of research projects within the Department of Physical and Health Education. He has been a Research Assistant in both the Psychology of Physical Activity and Health Promotion Lab, and the Exercise Physiology Lab. In the former, Caleb contributed to faculty research by assisting in the analysis of data from questionnaires, focus groups, and movement analyses. In the latter, Caleb played a primary role in the development of a research instrument designed to measure muscle force production during isometric contractions. Currently, he is conducting an ambitious research study examining the influence of muscle oxygenation on low load resistance training using a variety of complex research techniques.
Caleb is also the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Women’s Varsity Basketball Team. His commitment to the team is extensive; spending numerous hours per week, during both competitive and off-season, designing training programs, conducting movement assessments and leading educational workouts. Caleb applies his knowledge of exercise physiology while helping athletes on the team achieve their fitness & performance goals.
Caleb plans to become a professional Strength and Conditioning Coach within the realm of professional sports in Canada. He also intends to continue his ongoing training to one day compete in Olympic Weightlifting provincially and nationally.

Teagan is working towards a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate/Senior Divisions.
Teagan's leadership in academics is evident through his consistently outstanding marks and his ongoing thesis research within the Centre for Physical and Health Education’s Exercise Physiology Lab. For his proposed research, Teagan aims to work with novice runners to improve the metabolic cost of locomotion through real-time visual feedback and simultaneous measurement of the oxygen consumption and biomechanical aspects of running. Teagan is passionate about exercise physiology and applies knowledge from both his Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Physical and Health Education when conducting research. He has submitted his Research Ethics Application, finalized his literature review, and is moving into the data collection phase of his thesis.
Teagan is also passionate about running. He has been a member of the Varsity Cross-Country Running Team for four consecutive years, and has dedicated many hours every week to building his running fitness. He further demonstrated his leadership as Team Captain and was twice recognized as MVP. Teagan is committed to balancing academics, athletics, and research. He is a four-time Academic All-Canadian award recipient.
Upon graduation, Teagan plans to continue his research while completing his Master of Science in Kinesiology with the ultimate goal of attending medical school.

Mackenzie is working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Mackenzie has demonstrated leadership in academics through his role as a Research Assistant and involvement with a variety of research projects within the Department of Nursing. Mackenzie took the initiative to spearhead and submit his own research project through the ROMEO system that will attempt to understand best practices for clinical placements using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
Mackenzie is a student who has achieved academic success while pursuing extracurricular activities. He aims to learn about the nursing culture and helps to guide other students in their pursuit by maintaining executive positions with the Nipissing University Nursing Society as well as the RNAO Nursing Students of Ontario interest group. He regularly seeks out professional development opportunities and brings that learning back to the classroom to share with his peers.?
Makenzie dedicates his time to volunteering on a regular basis at both the North Bay Regional Health Center and The Gathering Place in the kitchen and the community garden throughout the summer. Mackenzie also works as a Pharmacy Assistant where he applies knowledge from his degree program while gaining practical experience.

Katie is working towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Specialization in Biology and a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate/Senior Divisions.
Katie has demonstrated her leadership in academics as a Tutor, Teaching Assistant, and Researcher within the Department of Biology and Chemistry. As a Researcher, Katie is currently working on a Thesis project studying foliage samples of heavily browsed trees from Gros Morne National Park and conducting chemical analysis to determine the samples' nutritional quality. Results of this analysis are shared with Parks Canada Biologists to help them manage declining forests and moose populations in Western Newfoundland.? In support of her thesis, Katie was awarded a Talon Research Assistantship. Katie has also received a Schulich Scholarship, Carl Sanders' Scholarship, and President's Scholarship.
As a Teaching Assistant, Katie supported the Ecology of Ontario Trees and Forests course, the Biology Field Camp course, and an Introductory Chemistry Course by leading field trips, overseeing the collection of field data, marking tests and assignments, evaluating plant collections, and supporting students.
As an Executive member for both the Biology and Chemistry Societies, Katie has been involved in organizing events and fundraisers such as the Biology/Chemistry Thesis Night, fundraisers in support of the North Bay and NUSU food banks,? a "Where Will Your Biology Degree Take You" presentation and more. After graduation, Katie hopes to become a Secondary School Science Teacher and advocate for environmental issues and conservation in her community.

Parker is working towards a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate/Senior Divisions.
Parker has demonstrated his campus leadership through his roles as Volunteer, NUSU Elections Committee Member, Lakers Crew Member, Director-at-Large, Men's Volleyball Team Manager, and Men's Volleyball Assistant Coach.
Parker has gone above and beyond to fight for causes that help others. He has volunteered with the NUSU Movember fundraiser which aims to bring awareness around men's health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention; the Men's Volleyball Hunger Spike fundraiser, an annual volleyball skills and fundamentals clinic for children aged 9-14 in support of the NUSU Food Bank; and Shinerama, a fundraiser in support of cystic fibrosis research. Parker has been involved in Movember fundraising for over 6 years, raising more than $3000 in that time.
Parker is the kind of leader who fosters positivity, promotes community engagement, and unites those around him. As a volunteer, he has logged more than 1000 hours as Team Manager and Assistant Coach for the Men’s Volleyball Team. He also volunteers as a Laker’s Crew Member where he can be found motivating students to come out to Lakers’ Games and show their Lakers Pride.
After graduation, Parker plans to pursue a Master of Science in Kinesiology with the ultimate goal of becoming a high school Phys Ed Teacher and Volleyball Coach.

Jordan is working towards a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate/Senior Divisions with Physical Education and Biology Teachables.
Throughout his time at Nipissing university, Jordan has demonstrated his campus leadership through his roles as an Athlete, Assistant Coach, and Volunteer. He has volunteered to assist the Varsity Rowing Team, the Nordic Ski Club, and to help with the OUA's in 2018. He balanced being an athlete on the Nordic Ski Team and Cross Country Running Team while completing his previous degree and is currently balancing his role of Assistant Coach for the Ski Team while completing his Bachelor of Education.
Jordan has represented Canada at three major international competitions for Nordic Skiing: the World Junior Championships in Estonia in 2011, the World University Games in Italy in 2013, and the World University Games in Kazakhstan in 2017. In addition to these competitions, Jordan won two gold medals at the OUA’s in 2018. He currently has 27 notable athletic achievements, including a number of gold, silver, and bronze finishes in the OUA Championships and Canadian National Championships.
Jordan's attitude and willingness to help his teammates have played a large part in propelling Nipissing to one of the top schools in the country for Nordic Skiing. He is the kind of leader who inspires others to get involved and this has directly resulted in new athletes joining the Nordic Ski Team.
Jordan is hardworking, modest, and always puts others first. After graduation, he hopes to combine his passions for sport, coaching, and education into a meaningful career path as a varsity or youth level coach or as a Phys Ed Teacher.

Lynne is working towards a Bachelor of Arts with a Specialization in Sociology.
Lynne has demonstrated her leadership on campus as a volunteer for the Office of Indigenous Initiatives’ programs and events. She volunteered for the Welcome Pow Wow, the Peer2Peer Mentorship program (which pairs Indigenous students at Nipissing University together for mentorship), the Wiidooktaadwin mentorship initiative (a group mentorship program for Indigenous students in local high schools), and for Debwendizon (an annual on-campus Indigenous youth education and recruitment gathering). Lynne also volunteered her time for talking and sharing circles with visiting Elders, as well as a number of other social, cultural, and special events.
With the Wiidooktaadwin mentorship initiative, Lynne mentored youth at Northern Secondary School in Sturgeon Falls. She went above and beyond in this role to make homemade bannock and fry bread, perform songs with her drum, and share traditional teachings with her mentorship group. The way she engaged with the youth led to increased participation in the program and inspired teachers at Northern Secondary School to start their own mentorship program.
Lynne is strong, humble, kind and determined to create a welcoming space for those around her. She is an advocate for Indigenous youth and those who are unable to advocate for themselves. She is driven to build community and takes the initiative to share her traditional cultural knowledge with others.
In the future, she hopes to continue to learn and grow as a proud two-spirited Anishinaabekwe, trying to make positive impacts in all that she does.

Armann is working towards a Bachelor of Arts Honours Specialization in English and a Bachelor of Education in the Intermediate/Senior Divisions.
Armaan has demonstrated his leadership on campus through his roles as Residence Don, Living Learning Community Don, Community Assistant, Ontario Universities’ Fair Representative, and Campus Tour Guide. In each of these roles, Armaan has been an active contributor to, and promotor of Nipissing University student life.
In the three years that Armaan devoted to residence life, he excelled. Each year he took on additional responsibility and complex portfolios, grew and developed as a professional, and balanced his academic priorities while simultaneously creating long-lasting, meaningful relationships with students. Armaan's ability to inspire and foster leadership on campus is exemplified in the way he has been able to motivate students to get involved, whether through participating in programming or taking on leadership roles themselves.
As an Ontario Universities’ Fair Representative and Campus Tour Guide, Armaan’s passion for Nipissing University is evident in his interactions with prospective students and their supporters. Mitchell is working towards a Bachelor of Liberal Arts with French and Spanish Minors.
Mitchell has demonstrated his leadership on campus through his roles as a Residence Don, Living Learning Community Don, and Nipissing Canadore Christian Fellowship President.
Mitchell naturally creates community wherever he goes. He hosts regular pancake breakfasts and game nights to bring folks together and is always willing to extend a hand to those in need. He is a genuine and caring person and is for that reason regularly sought out for support by peers. Mitchell is known to encourage students to pursue leadership opportunities within Residence, such as becoming a floor representative or joining a committee.
Mitchell is the type of leader who encourages others to think positively, view situations from other points of view, and to treat everyone with kindness because you never know what they're going through. He inspires others to be more outgoing, kind and involved on campus. As the Nipissing Canadore Christian Fellowship President, Mitchell encourages others to actively practice their faith and to get involved in events and activities that the fellowship puts on.
Next year, Mitchell plans to return to Nipissing for the Bachelor of Education program, with the future goal of becoming an Elementary School Teacher.

Emilia is working towards a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education.
Emilia has demonstrated her leadership on campus through her involvement with both the Equity Centre and Varsity Athletics. She is a two-time Academic All Canadian award recipient, the Varsity Rowing Team Captain, a member of the Equity Centre Executive, and the Student Athletic Trainer for both the Men’s and Women’s Varsity Hockey teams.
As a Varsity Rower, Emilia exhibits the characteristics of dedication, perseverance, and accountability. In recognition of this, she received the Lakers P.R.I.D.E. award in 2018. As the Rowing Team Captain, Emilia took the initiative to organize team bonding activities such as potlucks, movie nights, and social gatherings. As a student trainer for the varsity hockey teams, Emilia assesses injuries and treats athletes at practices, home games, and away games. She mentors injured athletes, making referrals to the head athletic therapist when needed.
Emilia is a tireless advocate for campus inclusivity as a member of the Equity Centre. In this role, she helped to plan and co-host a “Camping for Pride” event at Algonquin Provincial Park and has volunteered her time with other campaigns and events such as a recent HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
Emilia is the kind of leader who connects with others one on one and tailors the support and mentorship needed to the individual. In the future, Emilia aspires to become a registered Kinesiologist and a certified Athletic Therapist or Massage Therapist.

Paige is working towards a Master of Environmental Studies.
Paige has demonstrated her campus leadership through a variety of artistic contributions, volunteering, and as a representative of the indigenous student experience locally, provincially, and internationally.?
As an artist, Paige facilitated a public mural as part of Akawe Daadakokii Art Collective through the White Water Gallery. This public mural was a reconciliation initiative that invited indigenous folks with something to say about improving our ways of living together to contribute to the project. Paige’s artwork ‘Two Bodies One Heart,’ which expresses the life experiences of an indigenous mother, received 5th place in the Ingenious Arts and Stories contest in 2016.
As a volunteer, Paige contributed to the "Deeping Our Collective Understanding, Redefining Student Success" research project to help define success for Indigenous students in post-secondary. She also volunteered for the launch of the Treaty Learning Center in 2016 and represented Nipissing University at the Canada-Mexico Roundtable on Indigenous Higher Education which was held in Mexico in the Fall of 2018. In 2016, Paige spoke on behalf of the indigenous student experience during a visit from the Special Advisor on Indigenous Issues to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development.
Paige is a role model for how to balance education while being a parent. She freely gives her time to bring people together around traditional food and traditional learning.
After graduation, Paige plans to work in either her home community or in another First Nations community.

Taylor is working towards a Master of Science in Kinesiology.
Taylor has demonstrated her campus leadership by taking the initiative to launch the #iamstrongher campaign which featured a week of events on the topic of positive body image including Mirrorless Monday, Talk About it Tuesday, What We Love About Our Body Wednesday, Smash the Scale, and Feel Good Friday.
For Mirrorless Monday, the mirrors in restrooms across campus were covered for the day and students were encouraged to be good to themselves and their bodies regardless of appearance. Talk About it Tuesday engaged students in an online discussion about why body positivity is important to them. What We Love About Our Body Wednesday asked students to write down what they love about their bodies to be posted around campus. The Smash the Scale event invited students to physically smash a scale to show that a number on a scale does not determine their self-worth. The week culminated with Feel Good Friday, which featured a body positive Zumba class.
Taylor is a kind, caring, hardworking individual. She strives to empower others to be the best they can be. Upon graduation, Taylor would like to become a fundraiser. Specifically, she would like to work for a nonprofit that raises funds for eating disorder awareness, prevention, and treatment. Taylor would like to see the #iamstrongher campaign implemented on other university campuses so that the message can reach even more women and girls.

Alexis is working towards a Bachelor of Education in the Junior/Intermediate Divisions with a Physical Education Teachable.
Alexis has demonstrated her campus leadership in a number of ways. She has been an active participant and recruiter for intramural sports. She contributed to the ibelgonatnipissingu.ca student blog. She participated in the Kinesiology Games in Vancouver in 2014 and became the head coordinator for the games in 2016. She was selected to represent Nipissing University in March 2018 at the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Assembly conference held by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation in Toronto. She has also been both a Junior/Intermediate Representative and President of the Teacher Candidate Advisory Council. Alexis was instrumental in the creation and organization of the first Orientation to Education for incoming Bachelor of Education students graduating in 2020.
Alexis organized a number of events, fundraisers, and feedback sessions for Bachelor of Education students on campus. Based on feedback from current students in the program, Alexis planned the first ever Orientation to Education day for incoming teacher candidates.? The event was born out of the need to foster a sense of community, security, and comfort among new students in the program and the resulting event received tremendous feedback from participants.
Alexis is hard-working, dedicated and passionate. Upon graduation, she plans to travel internationally to teach in England. She is excited to see where in the world her passion for teaching, travelling and helping others will take her in her future.

Carly is working towards a Bachelor of Arts Honours Specialization in English with a major in Classical Studies.
Carly has demonstrated her campus leadership through her involvement with a variety of the Office of Indigenous Initiatives’ programs and events. She has volunteered to be a Peer2Peer Mentor for three years, which involves being available to students for help with school work, advice, or even just a chat to relieve stress. She also has three years of experience volunteering with the Wiidooktaadwin Mentorship Program to mentor Indigenous students at local high schools. In 2018, Carly was a speaker for the Dibwendizon Student Conference that brought Indigenous high school students from across Ontario for a two-day visit to our campus. Beyond this, Carly was chosen to speak on behalf of indigenous students with the Minister of Crown Indigenous Relations, Carolyn Bennett.
Carly advocates for Indigenous youth to consider post-secondary and is a positive role model for the high school student she mentors. Simply by being herself and sharing her experiences, she models for them that they too can attend university and be successful. Carly does an excellent job of building confidence in others in both of her mentorship roles.? She consistently acts with kindness and humility and works to help those around her feel strong and confident in who they are and the skills the posses.
After graduation, Carly plans to pursue a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies at Laurentian University and eventually work in the field of Indigenous Academia.

Emily has demonstrated her campus leadership through her roles as Residents' Council Yearbook Chair, Formal Committee Member, Residence Don, Living Learning Community Don, Community Assistant, Conference Presenter, Residence Open House Volunteer, and Frosh Leader.
Throughout her time in Residence, she took on increasing responsibility and eventually came to lead a team of Don’s as a Community Assistant. Emily supported students through difficult transitions and empowered them to grow, learn, and get involved. She helped to plan, market, and promote various creative events and educational programs to bring the community together. Emily also volunteered her time for Residence recruitment events to help new students feel apart of the Lakers community.
After transitioning out of residence, Emily sought out the opportunity to continue to grow her leadership skills as a Frosh Leader. In this role, Emily’s bright personality and energizing presence helped her to be a positive role model for many incoming students. Emily is the kind of leader who acknowledges the potential in others and makes space for them to shine in their own right. She is deeply caring, kind-hearted and passionate about Nipissing and its student community.

Children's Soccer Coach, Volunteer Intramural Referee, Biidaaban Youth Group Volunteer, and Academic Success Program Student Assistant. Mykaela is also a recipient of an Academic All Canadian award, and a Ted Chase Award for her commitment to both academics and athletics.?
Mykaela is generous with her time and seeks out opportunities to help others whenever she can. As Women's Varsity Soccer Team Captain, she organized study halls to bring the team together to support each other academically. Mykaela also used her leadership to inspire her teammates. Before the team's first playoff game, she gave a motivational speech despite the fact that she wouldn't be starting in the game herself, something she had been looking forward to her entire soccer career. She motivated players with the message that they would make history for the institution, and the team went on to win, 4-0.
Mykaela is an intelligent, hardworking, and honest leader who puts others before herself. She volunteers in the community as a children’s soccer coach, has been involved with the International Student Mentorship Program for two years, and has recently started volunteering with the Office of Indigenous Initiatives’ Biddabaan Youth Group.
In the future, Mykaela plans to pursue a Bachelor of Education at Nipissing University with the ultimate goal of teaching the sciences at the intermediate/senior level.

Riley is working towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Specialization in Environment and Physical Geography.
Riley has demonstrated community leadership through his extensive involvement within the community throughout his degree. He has been on the board of directors for both the Friends of Laurier Woods and Nipissing Naturalists. He has volunteered his time to provide educational guided hikes through Laurier Woods on topics such as insects, native pollinators, and the history of the woods. This past September, he organized a tree planting event in partnership with the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority which resulted in a few hundred trees being planted along Chippewa Creek and contributed to reducing soil erosion in the area. In addition to this, Riley also volunteers with the North Bay Air Search and Rescue where he trains other volunteers to be prepared for search and rescue missions in North Bay and surrounding areas.
Riley also helped to organize a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) day on campus which brought together high school students, university students, university staff, folks from local businesses, and members of municipal, provincial, and federal government, including the Deputy Chief of the North Bay Police Department for an introduction to Geographic Information Systems and how they are used locally.? As part of the day, Riley helped to deliver a specially designed demonstration within the Geography Department’s GIS lab for the 50 high school students in attendance. The event was a great success and would not have happened without Riley’s initiative, dedication and leadership.
After graduation, Riley plans to pursue a Master of Science in Geography at Carleton University.

Dawn is working towards a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Native Studies and a Bachelor of Commerce.
Dawn has demonstrated her community leadership through her volunteer roles with the office of Indigenous Initiatives as Peer2Peer Mentor, Biidaaban Youth Group Volunteer, and Debwendizon Panelist.
As a Biidaaban Youth Group Volunteer, Dawn hosted a weekly after-school program for youth ages 4 - 10 at the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre where she offered help with homework as well as crafts and games. This program meets a need for Indigenous academic support within the community of North Bay. Dawn's consistently positive energy and cheerful way she interacted with the children was a big part of the programs week-to-week success. Dawn also donated her time to speak as part of a panel for the Debwendizon Indigenous Youth Education Gathering which welcomed Indigenous Youth from across Ontario to Nipissing University for hands on learning activities. Beyond this, Dawn also donated her time to mentor through the Peer2Peer mentorship program.
Dawn demonstrates to others how to balance multiple responsibilities in a healthy way. She is a wife, mother, volunteer, and student and still finds time to support others whenever she can. She is a welcoming and friendly face within the EnjiGiigdoyang Student Lounge, where she encourages others to make good choices and seek out support when needed.
Dawn is cheerful, adaptable, flexible and reliable. In the future, she aspires to become an elementary school teacher who teaches Indigenous culture to students.

Kyle is working towards a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice in the Policing Stream.
Kyle has demonstrated his community leadership through volunteering with the Crown Christian Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Near North Baptist Church’s Youth Ministry, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and Victim Services of Nipissing District.
Kyle strives to make a positive impact on others in everything he does. This is exemplified through his service in multiple volunteer roles. As a Crown Christian Student Society Coordinator, Kyle runs a weekly Bible study and facilitates regular religious programming for students. Kyle is a devoted and courageous Christian who shows dedication to what he believes through the way he actively shares the Gospel with peers and community members. In order to both better himself, and be better able to support folks in need, Kyle has sought out certifications such as safeTALK, Straight Talk, Mental Health First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, Consent+, Gender 101 and many more.
In addition to his various volunteer roles off campus, Kyle also sought out opportunities to support student on campus as a General Council member, a Vice-President Athletics and Wellness, Residence Don, and a Psychology Society Representative. In all of these roles he has demonstrated compassion, empathy and drive to make a difference in the lives of others.
After graduation, Kyle plans to pursue a career in Policing while continuing to volunteer. He aspires to become a resilient, courageous leader and a role model capable of encouraging change.

Samuel is working towards a Bachelor of Education in the Junior/Intermediate Divisions with a Physical Education Teachable.
Samuel has demonstrated his community leadership through his three years of experience as a volunteer coach for North Bay Spartan’s Basketball. In this role, Samuel coached the 3 on 3 program and 2 rep teams per season while completing his degree program. He also volunteered his time to run a summer program for serious basketball athletes to continue to work on skills and strength. His positive influence has contributed to the success of many local athletes.
Samuel is an amazing coach who, because of his even temperament, great personality, and knowledge of the sport, has the ability to connect with young athletes and push them to achieve (or want to achieve) their potential. Samuel has gone above and beyond to support families in need. Rep sports typically come with a cost, and not all athletes can afford the fees. Believing in the importance of equal access to sports programs, Samuel helped families through the paperwork required to apply for funding so that children who ordinarily could not afford to participate were able to join the team.
Samuel is a thoughtful, empathic coach and individual. In the future, he hopes to become a teacher who inspires students to become confident in whatever they would like to do in their futures. In his spare time, Samuel intends to continue volunteering in the North Bay sports community to pay forward what his previous mentors and coaches have done for him.

Lisa is working towards a Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the Scholar Practitioner Program.
Lisa has demonstrated her community leadership by advocating for, and educating others about, the need for bone marrow transplant donors in Canada.
During her practicum, Lisa became aware of the silent crisis occurring in the bone marrow transplant community. Through research, Lisa discovered that only 2% of Canadians were registered to be a donor and that there is a particular need for more ethnically diverse stem cell donors. Certain bone marrow transplant recipients have an even lower chance of finding a donor due to the lack of donor diversity. As a result, Lisa became passionate about advocating for greater awareness and education surrounding stem cell donation and donor registration in Canada.
Lisa took the initiative to conduct research, and apply knowledge from her degree program to create educational resources on the topic. She then requested to have these resources displayed at Princess Margaret Hospital to raise awareness. Lisa also reached out to Canadian Blood Services and One Match to inquire about the possibility of facilitating donor drives to increase donor registration and education. Currently, there are no such programs in Canada. Lisa hopes to be able to work towards making donor drives as easily accessible as those in the United States.
Upon graduation, Lisa hopes to begin her nursing career at SickKids within the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in Toronto. She plans to specialize in pediatric oncology and the care of bone marrow transplant patients.

Kyla is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Specialization in Anthropology.
Kyla is an exceptional student, researcher, presenter, and research assistant. She has presented research at both national and international academic conferences, including the 2017 Undergraduate Research Conference, the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, and the Canadian Anthropology Society Conference, and has recently had an abstract of her thesis accepted to be presented at the Society for Applied Anthropology/Canadian Anthropology Society, an international conference to be held in Cuba this spring.
Kyla shows exceptional skill as a researcher; she keeps detailed and insightful field notes, is able to build rapport with participants in both field and interview contexts, has navigated the ethics review processes, and has demonstrated the ability to make the leap from observation to interpretation in her writing.
Kyla is inquisitive, steadfast, reliable, and thoughtful in her work; her passion for Anthropology is contagious. When not engaged in research, she is actively seeking out new opportunities for learning, whether through department speaker series’ events or her own additional reading. As co-president of the Sociology and Anthropology Society, Kyla has brought awareness of Anthropology as a discipline, to the broader campus community. Jylelle will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Honours Specialization in English Studies with a major in Gender Equality and Social Justice this spring.
Jylelle’s area of research is socio-legal studies pertaining to the issues of sexual violence; and, relations between Indigenous and settler Canadians. Her research papers on these important social justice issues have garnered her top grades in the GESJ program. She presented her paper regarding the need for settler accountability for violence against Indigenous women and girls, to the 2017 NU Student Research Conference. Jylelle has deepened her understanding of the social and legal dimensions to sexual violence against Indigenous women, through her employment as research assistant on Dr. Nagy’s SSHRC-funded human-trafficking project. Jylelle will pursue a career in law, and has been accepted to several law schools, including Osgoode Law (York University).
Jylelle’s academic accomplishments include numerous awards: NU President’s Scholarship (2015, 2017); NU Chancellor’s Award 2014; CIS Academic All-Canadian (2015, 2016). A true “public-spirited” leader, Jylelle balances her commitment to academics, with her commitment to community involvement. She was a member of the NU varsity women’s hockey team for two years; played a key role in the GESJ Student Collective mental health awareness campaign for male students; and, volunteered for NU’s Shakespeare After School community program. During the summer, Jylelle leads athletic summer camps for disadvantaged children in her home town.

Morgan is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honours Specialization in Biology.
Morgan consistently scores at the top of her class and shows great dedication to her work. Throughout her time at Nipissing, Morgan has been a Peer Tutor, Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Biology Society executive, and Biology Society President. Through her various roles with the Nipissing University Biology Society, Morgan has planned trips, fundraisers, and workshops for the benefit of others, and has been a role model for her peers.
As a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Nosko’s Biology Field Camp, Morgan spent the summers of 2016 and 2017, collecting important data for Parks Canada. In this role, Morgan demonstrated dedication, organization and reliability under pressure. She was able to simultaneously support the course, and collect data for her own thesis project examining the health of forest ecosystems in Gros Morne National Park. The findings of Morgan’s research will help Parks Canada biologists make important decisions about managing moose and Balsam Fir forests. Morgan is an ambassador and a trailblazer for the university; because of the success of her research, and the diligence she exhibited in ensuring the project’s completion, Parks Canada will continue to support Nipissing University students into the future.
Morgan is a caring, compassionate, and very personable individual. Given her leadership skills and academic and personal strengths, Morgan will undoubtedly excel in her future in the health sciences field.

Rebekah is in the Scholar Practitioner Program, working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Rebekah is an exceptional student, research assistant, and significant contributor to the field of Nursing. During her practicum at Healthy Babies Healthy Children at Toronto Public Health, she identified a knowledge gap concerning support for mothers with postpartum depression, which led her to research and write a literature review entitled “Improving maternal-infant relationships in mothers with postpartum mood disorders”, which has been accepted for publication by the American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing.
In the academic community, Rebekah is a club founder, establishing the Research and Nursing Theory (RANT) club for students in the Scholar Practitioner Program (SPP). The club engages in collective research, which is to be presented at the upcoming Undergraduate Research Conference this March and Rebekah is leading a group of students as first author of a paper focusing on utilizing narrative inquire methodology to link practice experiences to different nursing theories.
Rebekah is a curious, insightful, technologically competent, courageous, and knowledgeable individual embodying the core principles of the SPP. After graduation, she plans to pursue nursing research and obtain a Master’s Degree to participate in evidence-based practice.

Paula is working toward Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours Specialization in Gender Equality and Social Justice.
Paula is personally committed to transformative social justice activism through research. Academically, she has quietly distinguished herself as a student whose commitment to excellence in her studies is equally matched to her commitment to connecting her intellectual work to real-world issues. Paula excels at wrestling with difficult theory, and with felicity, deploys a diversity of approaches to her research.
Paula’s Honours thesis entitled “Humans vs. Animals: A Critical Analysis of White Veganism”, is a critical consideration of the inherently racialized nature of ‘mainstream’ veganism through an analysis of a popular online vegan website. Put simply, Paula’s work is revealing the mainstream vegan movement risks structurally excluding a range of people from different class and race backgrounds, and thus, has the potential to reproduce the very systems of power that place animals beneath people in a hierarchy of value in the first place. This research is timely, original, and poised to create positive change.
Paula plans to further her research on the intersection of critical animal studies and social justice studies with Brock University in the Social Justice and Equity Studies Masters Program. There is no doubt she will excel and substantially contribute to this new and emerging area of her field.

Jessie is a high academic achiever balancing multiple commitments - her studies, her volunteer positions, and her part-time Academic Success Program Assistant position in Student Development and Services. Jessie has maintained top marks throughout her time at Nipissing, earning the President’s Scholarship every year for the last four years. In her Academic Success Program Assistant role, Jessie uses her academic strengths to support her peers with achieving their own academic goals.

Chad is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Chad excels academically while working as a Pharmacy Technician at a local pharmacy, volunteering as a researcher in the Human Evolution Laboratory, and being involved on campus as a second-year representative for the Nipissing University Nursing Society.
In the classroom, Chad solidifies his knowledge gained at work by asking pertinent questions often addressing content well above the course requirements, and by doing so, has provided his classmates the opportunity to enhance their understanding of medications and pharmacology for Nurses.
While volunteering in the Human Evolution Laboratory, Chad has gone above and beyond, dedicating himself to learning complex procedures usually reserved for graduate students. He is developing strong wet lab skills for complex biological assays, such as white blood cell counting, and has obtained significant training and certification in the requisite health and safety procedures required to perform such work, including blood-born pathogen training, biological safety cabinet and autoclave training, and Public Health Agency of Canada Training. Chad’s drive to assist with complex research sets a good example to others about what it takes to make important research achievements. In the summer of 2018, Chad will be assisting with various manuscript preparations and conference presentations as a co-author.

Cory has been a student representative for the Faculty of Education at Senate, Vice President of the Nipissing University Physical Health and Education Student Council, Secretary for the Nipissing University Biology Society, a Research Assistant, a Researcher, and a Peer Tutor.
Cory has proven himself to be a very capable researcher, demonstrating excellence when working with confidential data, showing respect and compassion for research participants, and problem solving in a dynamic work environment, and is an integral member of the research team within the Department of Physical and Health Education. He has been involved in data collection for several research projects conducted in the Biomechanics Laboratory while also completing an undergraduate research project examining neuromuscular response to combined environmental stressors. Cory’s experience in the lab has helped him expand his skillset by learning advanced neuromuscular assessment techniques.

Madison is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours in English Studies, and History.
Madison has been actively involved in the Nipissing University campus community as a Residents’ Council Executive, Residence Office Assistant, Guest Services Representative, English Club volunteer, and Residence Don.
As a Residents’ Council Executive, Madison was nominated by her peers to take on the responsibility of advocating for their interests, decision making on their behalf, and planning social programming. In this role, Madison worked alongside Residence Life Management Staff to provide input on important department policy updates and other key decisions. In these conversations, Madison demonstrated her capacity for putting community development first.
As a Residence Don, Madison excelled in each facet of her role. She learned and practiced skills in the areas of higher education, teamwork, communication, event assistance, marketing, mental health awareness, and pro-social behavior. She aided in creating a positive community environment for students and supported them in their transition to university life. She demonstrated excellence in her ability to make referrals to appropriate campus resources, assess situations, ensure the health and security of residents, and follow departmental policies.

Joseph is in the Concurrent Bachelor of Education Degree Program – Junior/Intermediate Division.
Joseph is a hardworking, diligent, and dedicated, teacher candidate who is committed to enhancing learning opportunities for students of all ages.
While on practicum with the Grand Erie District School Board, Joseph co-initiated a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) club for students. This club was an instantaneous success and offered enriching and innovative hands on problem solving activities for students.
With a STEM club field trip in mind, Joseph collaborated with 12 other teacher candidates to plan and present an Innovation Fair at Nipissing University’s Brantford Campus. The fair was inspired by Alexander Graham Bell and Brantford’s history as the telephone city. It featured interactive activities that taught participants about Canadian inventors and how technology has evolved over time. Attendees included teachers, staff, students, superintendents, and the Director of the school board. The fair brought positive press to the university and was highlighted in the Brantford Expositor. The field trip was the catalyst for many more workshops and an eventual presentation to the Governor General of Canada on April 25, 2017.
Joseph seizes every opportunity to make a positive impact on our campus, and works collaboratively with others to achieve common goals. His role in the STEM Club and Innovation Fair helped showcase the quality work of students in the Bachelor of Education Program.

Samantha is in the Concurrent Bachelor of Education Degree Program, and is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours in History, and Geography, and a Bachelor of Education degree – Intermediate/Senior division.
Samantha has been a volunteer and student leader in the Enji Giidoyang for four years. She has volunteered with Wiidooktaadwin Mentorship Initiatives, the Peer 2 Peer Mentorship Program, Biidaaban Community Service Learning, Aasagaawitaadwin Indigenous Youth Leadership Conference, Debwendizon Indigenous Youth Education Gathering, Welcome to Community, Wampum Belt Beading Sessions, National Aboriginal Day, numerous speaker series events, and other special events through the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
Samantha has also worked with the Circle of Caring Program offered through Biidaaban Community Service Learning in local North Bay elementary schools, to co-create resources for an anti-bullying initiative. The initiative involved inviting local volunteers – members of the North Bay Police Services and North Bay Fire & Emergency Services - to read to Indigenous students at the primary level. Samantha’s role in facilitating this project helped to raise awareness of the barriers facing Indigenous students and communities, and helped to contribute to the program’s goals of building kindness, inclusiveness, identity, and culture in schools.
Samantha is a loyal, reliable, compassionate, and honest person. She has volunteered her time for countless campus and community programs, asking little in return.

Nicolai is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honours Specialization in Environment and Physical Geography.
Nicolai has been involved on campus as the President of the Geography Club, a Townhouse Residence Complex Don, and as the Athletics and Wellness Executive for Residents’ Council. He consistently seeks out opportunities to get others involved in sports, Residence Life events, or workshops offered by Student Development and Services. He has recruited students to participate in intramural softball, has went out of his way to help one student find an affordable way to participate in basketball, and can often be found encouraging others to come out to support the Lakers at a variety of different events. As President of the Geography Club, Nicolai takes time to spread knowledge about the subject to any student interested through events, booths, and office hours.
Everything Nicolai says and does promote community building. As a Residence Don, Nicolai often collaborates on meaningful community building programs with Residents’ Council and other Residence Life team members. He chooses his words carefully and always uses inclusive language. Nicolai has taken the information he attained through participation in the Safe Talk, Consent +, Bringing in the Bystander, and Gender 101 workshops, and has implemented it into his day-to-day interactions.

Lauren is well respected by her peers and professors, and has played a significant role in promoting both the Chemistry and Biology departments, as well as Nipissing University as a whole.
She served for three years as a Biology Society Executive, volunteering much of her time and taking lead in organizing events such as: The Biology Christmas Party, Octoberfest, Biology/Chemistry Thesis Night, Annual Charles Darwin’s Birthday Presentation, “Where Will Your Biology Degree Take You” presentations, and fundraisers to support the North Bay and NUSU Food Banks. Currently, Lauren is the incoming President of the Biology Society.
Lauren’s service to the university and the community is diverse. She has volunteered at Nipissing Open House, at the 2017 Ontario Universities’ Fair, as a Research Assistant in the Neuroscience Lab, and has donated more than 250 hours as a Diagnostic Imaging Volunteer at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Lauren has also worked as a Marketing Assistant at the University, a Coordinator for the Leave the Pack behind Program to help students with smoking cessation, and a Peer Tutor.

Daniel has volunteered for the North Bay Youth Volleyball Club as both an Assistant Coach for the U17 Boys team, and as a member of the Board of Directors. He has been a Student Mentor for the annual Enterprise Olympics, and is committed to involving himself in further mentorship opportunities at Nipissing University through the International Student Mentorship Program, the Athletics Disciplinary Board, and through working as a Peer Educator.
Daniel organized an initiative for youth patients spending their Christmas holiday at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. For the youth patients, he organized the distribution of both gifts and tickets to Lakers games, which led to the patients and their family members being invited to watch a Lakers Hockey game in the VIP box at Memorial Gardens.
Daniel is a humble and positive individual who displays the natural qualities of a leader on a daily basis. He is a two-time Academic All-Canadian, and uses his role as Captain of the Lakers Men’s Volleyball team to encourage and motivate his teammates to enhance their academic and personal skills and help others.

Shannon is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours in Criminal Justice, Policing stream.
Shannon has been involved with the Criminal Justice Student Association, as both President and Vice President, Alpha Phi Sigma, the Criminal Justice Honour Society, and Residence Life as a Don.
As an executive member of the Criminal Justice Student Association, Shannon helped organize events to enhance the Criminal Justice student experience. She invited guest speakers from various areas of the criminal justice system and planned social events to help students connect with one another and find their place in the greater Nipissing community. In her role as a Residence Don, Shannon is often sought out by her peers for guidance and support because she is known for her genuine interest in developing meaningful connections and strong supportive relationships with her fellow students.

Over the past four years, Destiny has contributed to the overall campus culture through her participation in a variety of organizations and clubs. She has been a Frosh Leader, member of Jack.Org, Nipissing University Student Alumni volunteer, Open House Volunteer, First Year English Representative, General Council Social Chair, and Vice President Social for the Townhouse Residence Complex. She has also been a student member of the Arts and Science Curriculum Review Committee, Director-at-Large with the Nipissing University Student Union, an English tutor for the English Club, and the Philanthropy Chair for Alpha Gamma Phi, volunteering countless hours with the sorority fundraising for charities such as the Canadian Cancer Society and the North Bay Humane Society.
During her time as VP Social, Destiny organized a program called Agents of Kindness that encouraged students to complete small acts of kindness for their neighbours. She extended this initiative on campus and engaged in random acts of kindness for others at Nipissing.

Abbey is working toward a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Marketing stream.
Abbey is a kind and empathetic person, whose enthusiasm for Nipissing University shines through all she does at work, in her academics, and in her various volunteer roles.
On campus, Abbey donates her spare time to help out wherever she can. As a Peer Educator with Student Development and Services, she supports students in their transition to Nipissing through events like New Student Orientation and Laker Orientation. Identified as a positive role model for Nipissing, Abbey was invited to represent the School of Business at the Ontario Universities’ Fair this past fall. Abbey also showed her enthusiasm for Nipissing locally through a poster presentation, which featured the “NU Mona Lisa” print, and examined high renaissance genre’s use in advertising. The presentation was deemed passionate, resourceful, and thorough by attendees.
In the community, Abbey has been an active volunteer for FIRST Robotics, Anthony Rota’s Nipissing-Timiskaming Constituency Youth Council, and Worthy Devotion Day (a self-esteem and self-care day for girls which she founded) at Chippewa Secondary School.

Michael is working toward a Bachelor of Education degree – Intermediate/Senior Division.
Mike is a positive role model to both his peers and the community as a student, father, husband, teacher, and ambassador for both the Office of Indigenous Initiatives, and Nipissing University. His support in the planning and facilitation of the Reach Ahead Credit pilot program offered on campus this past July in partnership with the Near North District School Board, was integral to its success.
Mike has volunteered his time as a member of the planning committee for the annual Welcome Pow Wow, has helped plan activities for National Aboriginal Day celebrations, and has supported various events hosted by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.
Mike is both a lifelong learner and a teacher. He is a humble storyteller and collector of knowledge who exhibits a quiet strength. Due to these qualities, he was invited to participate in the Nbisiing Anishinaabeg Educators Working Group. Additionally, he was invited to speak on behalf of the Indigenous students on campus, with a Senior Policy Analyst and Special Advisor on Aboriginal Issues, to the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development. In both of these roles, Mike did an exceptional job.

Elizabeth has devoted herself to supporting and empowering younger students in care with current, or former crown ward status. As a former Crown Ward, Elizabeth has lived experience to share with other Crown Ward students and students in care. She has contributed her energy and educational expertise to developing workshops and events for high school students in the region as part of the Crown Ward Mentorship Program to help students reach their educational potential. Elizabeth has gone above and beyond in her role as a mentor, and volunteers her time working with several local community organizations and committees, including the Crown Ward Education Championship Table, and the Youth Advisory Group with the Children’s Aid Society.
Elizabeth hopes to become a teacher to inspire students to value education, and an adult her family can be proud of. She is a resilient and impeccable role model to all students and continues to be a valuable asset to our community. Samantha is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours in English Studies and Gender Equality and Social Justice.
Samantha has combined her academics and her passion for volunteerism and social justice by lending her skills and abilities to the Amelia Rising Centre as a Crisis Line and Centre Volunteer. For over two and a half years, she has provided support to those reaching out in times of distress and crisis in our local community through her work with the 24-hour Crisis Line. She has also participated in, and contributed to, public engagement and education for various events, namely Sexual Assault the Roadshow.
Samantha has worked on campus as the Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Outreach Student Assistant, and as an Events Coordinator volunteer for the Equity Center. These positions have seen Samantha creating a safer campus, with inclusive washroom signage and better policies, and bridge the gap between Nipissing University and the North Bay community by providing collaborative opportunities to create public awareness around the supports available for survivors of sexual violence.
Samantha is a reliable, compassionate, open, and dedicated individual, who speaks publicly of her support for Bill-148, and hopes to continue her social justice and community work by furthering her studies through a Masters of Social Work.

Jessica always makes time for those in need. She is an active volunteer with The Gathering Place, and has filled a variety of roles there, including Server, Cook, Weekend Kitchen Supervisor, and Teaching Kitchen Coordinator & Volunteer, where she has stabilized the organization of the weekend meals. Her positive attitude, willingness to learn, and the empathy she shows to the marginalized in our community, have promoted a feeling of worth among the clients at The Gathering Place, while also inspiring and motivating new volunteers.
Jessica has demonstrated great initiative and leadership by assuming the responsibility of Teaching Kitchens for women and those at-risk. She goes out of her way to ensure The Gathering Place’s clients are comfortable and happy, and shows great compassion toward everyone who walks through the doors. After graduation, Jessica plans to work as a Registered Nurse in North Bay and continue her volunteer work with the Gathering Place. Daniel has volunteered on campus and in the community in a variety of roles. He has been a Biidaaban Community Service Volunteer, St. Vincent Place Luncheon Assistant, Holiday Mass Volunteer at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Youth Basketball Camp volunteer for Little NBA & Small Ball, a Parish Usher at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, a Soccer Coach for Sault Amateur Association and Steel City Rapids, and a referee for the Special Olympics Soccer hosted in Sault Ste. Marie.
On campus, Daniel has also served as the Primary/Junior Division representative at the Ontario College of Teachers’ annual review of the Bachelor of Education Program at Nipissing University. He is a role model for his teaching colleagues and a devoted volunteer in his home community, as well as his new home here in North Bay.

Michelle is in the Concurrent Bachelor of Education Degree Program, and is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree, with Honours Specialization in Geography, and a Bachelor of Education degree – Primary/Junior division.
During her tenure as President for the Best Buddies Nipissing Chapter, Michelle led hundreds of students at Nipissing University and Canadore College to become active participants in the Best Buddies program – a program designed to create durable friendships between people with intellectual disabilities and those without. Michelle helped to match supported individuals from Community Living to current postgraduate students and spent many hours arranging a variety of recreational activities and games. These occasions allowed the individuals from Community Living the opportunity to experience University and College and interact meaningfully with people their own age. Michelle organized a website and a Facebook page for Best Buddies to allow all the Buddies to stay in contact and create long-lasting relationships. Many friendships and opportunities were created, which would otherwise not exist without this program.
Michelle is a motivated and caring person who values inclusion. She has mentored Peer Buddies and made sure there was a strong succession of Executive to carry on the valuable chapter. She is passionate, and caring, and has been a positive role model to many. These admirable attributes will serve her well as an educator.

Nicole is in the Bachelor of Arts, Honours with a Specialization in Psychology and the Bachelor of Education in the Primary/Junior divisions.
Nicole is helpful, kind, and always willing to support her peers in any way she can. Throughout her degree, she has supported her peers as a Peer Tutor, Academic Skills Drop-In Centre Volunteer, and TA for multiple Psychology classes.
Nicole is also a Research Assistant for Dr. Curwen in the Department of Psychology here at NU. Through this work, she has strengthened her knowledge and skills in the field of psychology by helping agencies improve their family services. As the lead researcher for a study related to sexually deviant behaviour in children, she collected data from several child and family support agencies in Toronto, analyzed the data, then presented the findings to the agencies. This information will help these agencies improve their treatment for this clinical population of children. The results were presented at a conference at Western University in February 2017.

Andrea is an active contributor to the Nipissing University Brantford campus community and has led a number of initiatives with her colleagues and peers. Andrea was a member of the Brantford campus mentorship program and was able to collaborate and co-teach throughout that experience in practicum schools.
Andrea was a part of the international teaching opportunity, and traveled to Italy for her alternative practicum placement in 2015, with a group of other teacher candidates and faculty facilitators. She very highly represented Nipissing while learning and growing her teaching styles and cultural knowledge in a new environment. After completion of her international practicum, she shared her experience with students interested in teaching internationally and wanting to learn about techniques for teaching English abroad.

Mr. Donovan is a confident and collaborative leader in the Psychology lab, in student activities, and in the classroom. Through his enthusiasm, competence, and guidance, James motivates and aids other lab members in their research pursuits. As Vice-President of the student’s Psychology Society, James gives students a voice in university affairs and encourages them to connect through psychology. James also serves as a positive role model as an informed and engaged participant in classroom discussions.
As a research volunteer, James demonstrated his motivation to learn and his excellent understanding of the research process. James is a highly effective and valued lab member who has already co-authored seven conference presentations (three as first author) at local, national, and international meetings. James is now leading a follow-up study and preparing the experiment for data collection. James also continues to contribute significantly to several other ongoing lab research projects.

Lauren is in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Scholar Practitioner Program.
Lauren is a critical thinker who draws inspiration for her research from both practical and academic experiences. As a research assistant, Lauren contributed to a minority immigrant study and innovative nursing education research. Lauren was invited to present on her learning experiences at the Nipissing University Board of Governors Meeting in January 2017.
Lauren makes a conscious effort to network with like-minded individuals, mentors, and professionals to enhance her knowledge of nursing and health concepts. Lauren has attended over 70 hours of extracurricular conferences and workshops since beginning in her program. After networking at the Women and Harm Reduction Conference, she took the initiative to invite speakers to campus to offer a workshop to her peers.
Lauren holds strong beliefs about offering culturally sensitive, trauma-informed nursing care. During her nursing placement in Toronto Public Health, Lauren thoroughly read through organizational policies and noticed a gap in knowledge. She advocated for the implementation of Trauma-Informed Care principles and was invited to speak to staff about the framework.
Lauren is growing to be a new generation nurse who is curious, insightful, technologically competent, courageous, and knowledgeable.

Kelly is an accomplished student who takes on multiple academic and social leadership roles on and off campus. These roles include: Outreach Assistant for Sexual Violence Prevention, President, Social Coordinator for the Social Welfare and Social Development Club, and Research Assistant. Kelly is also an active community volunteer at One Kids Place, Community Living, and the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre. In all of these roles, Kelly is an outgoing and thoughtful student leader.
Kelly’s academic accomplishments include assisting in the preparation of a SSHRC Partnership Development Grant that focused on Promoting Reconciliation through Collaboration between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Communities. In her own research, Kelly is working on an honours thesis examining the impacts of media industries on youth with a focus on how profit-making businesses emphasize sexist and racist values.
Whether it is supporting students who share her focus of study or providing education and training on sexual violence prevention Kelly is an empathetic leader who brings a professional approach to her work on campus. Two of Jenna’s outstanding projects include an original, engaging, and well-researched learning center based on Aboriginal culture which contained activities that were carefully chosen and culturally sensitive; and a richly described play-based learning center for young children. Spencer is an outstanding student who balances academics and community involvement with ease. While maintaining a high academic standing, Spencer helped other students as a Teaching Assistant in the Microbiology course, started cutting edge research in the organic chemistry lab, and founded the first Nipissing University Ice Fishing Club.
Spencer distinguished himself through delivering an exceptionally professional oral presentation to a large group of students about medicinal properties of essential oils from Eastern White Cedar. His presentation was accompanied by a quality written report on the topic.
Spencer goes above and beyond learning the course material in lecture and labs to independently seek out answers to his every curiosity about Biology in his spare time. His enthusiasm for science is contagious and has inspired other students to actively volunteer in Nipissing University’s science labs.

Academically, Darryl is one of the top students in the 4-year Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program at Nipissing University. Her GPA across all years is approximately 90%. She has been awarded the Schulich Scholarship in 2013, and the President’s Scholarship in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Daryl is remarkably gifted, hardworking, and a responsible student. She sets a positive academic example her peers. Daryl's drive to accomplish her goals and willingness to seek new educational opportunities is an inspiration to those around her. She shows deep interest in her research and is currently studying whether psychological deception can be used as a tool to improve human exercise performance in a hot environment. Ana shows incredible skill as a researcher. Her Honours Thesis explores, through semi-structured interviews, the experiences of military spouses in relation to frequent mobility and unstable employment. This research is a serious contribution to understanding the effects of tied migration for military families, and in particular, its effects on women. For a student at the undergraduate level, Ana has quite extensive research experience.
Ana has had a paper based on this research accepted for presentation at the Canadian Anthropology Society annual conference in Ottawa, ON in May.
While Ana demonstrates an outstanding ability to undertake research, it is her hunger for knowledge and her love of the discipline that impresses most. Last year she took the initiative to participate in the Canadian Anthropology Society annual conference at her own expense. While there, she was able to network and establish contacts with students and researchers from across Canada and beyond.

Candace balances a commitment to academic study with a commitment to social justice community building. As co-founder and co-director of the Gender Equality & Social Justice Student Collective, Candace organized a network of students majoring or minoring in the subject who are interested in connecting their studies to social justice campaigns and events.
The Collective, with Candace at the lead, has built a sense of community amongst students from different programs; hosted several social events for students and professors; given feedback on the university sexual assault policy; collaborated with the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives to host a vigil for missing and murdered indigenous women; and promoted on and off campus social justice events.
Candace recently worked to re-open the student-run Equity Centre on campus, which is accessible to all NU students and provides a positive meeting space for all students who want to learn about or discuss equity issues.

Haley is an ambassador for Nipissing University in everything that she does. She is passionate and enthusiastic about promoting Nipissing University to prospective students and parents whether on the phone, at the Ontario Universities’ Fair, or during the many campus tours she conducts throughout the year as part of her role in the Student Recruitment Office.
Haley has significantly contributed to campus culture through founding Nipissing University’s first sorority, Alpha Gamma Phi. The sorority unites and empowers women to get involved on campus and in the community. Alpha Gamma Phi actively supports the Canadian Cancer Society, the North Bay Humane Society, and Children's Aid Society through fundraising. To date, they have raised $4000 for Canadian Cancer Society and $700 for the Humane Society.

Dakota is a charismatic, upbeat, positive young man who upholds the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers at all times. He is passionate about making a difference in the lives of indigenous youth and has already done so in his roles as Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Assistant, Dibaadan Student, and Volunteer for the Ontario Indian Friendship Centre.
Over the past year, Dakota has played a significant role in helping to strengthen mental health services for Indigenous youth on campus through his work with the Dibaadan project. Dakota assisted in all aspects of the project including research on indigenous mental health supports, developing interview questions, conducting one on one interviews with students, facilitating a discussion circle with students and elders, disseminating data collected, and providing recommendations for future years.
As part of this project, Dakota also helped to advertise, plan, and support events including a Hand Drum Social which had 80 staff, students, and community members attend. As a major contributor to the program’s success this year, Dakota helped in the development of the program’s final report.
Dakota has a strong will to be successful in life. When working with, or volunteering alongside Dakota is it clear that he is deeply motivated by making a difference in the lives of his peers.

Sydney’s professional engagement, skill building, and practical experience has put her near the top in our residence leadership team. During her three years working in residence and Summer Accommodations, Sydney used her understanding of student life to create a marketing campaign that led to our highest intake of returning students living in residence. Sydney was also instrumental in a new residence orientation project which involved implementing an e-learning module - the first of its kind in Ontario.
Sydney’s commitment to innovation in the residence life community has allowed her to be involved in projects that are beyond her years of experience. She took on each project with enthusiasm, intention to learn, and desire to develop her already impressive skill set. She is a role model for other leaders, especially in seizing opportunities on campus and working with various professional staff to learn as much as she can.

Sydney has been a strong student voice standing up for the well-being of her peers in various capacities. She passionately speaks at senate meetings and now on the NUSU Board. She has is also a strong contributor in Andrew Weeks’ neuroscience lab. Now she has been elected to be the next NUSU President where she will continue to serve students and Nipissing University.
Sydney’s passion for taking initiative and speaking out for students has had a positive impact on how student issues are discussed at Nipissing. She has assisted students with their petitions to the senate and has been a strong advocate on the NUSU Board.
Sydney has always had a passion for making life for students easier. She assisted NUSU executives in discussing possible alterations to city transit to ease student travel. Emily has been a phenomenal student leader and possesses the ability to make incoming students feel at ease. Emily is also the Chapter Lead for the Jack.org Nipissing chapter, ensuring that students join the discussion surrounding mental health and mental illness.
Emily has worked hard to make sure students on campus have safe spaces to talk about mental health, mental illness, and concerns about stress etc. Emily has done this by advocating through Jack.org Nipissing to students and providing them with information that is beneficial to their needs. Emily’s leadership style is to work extremely hard and ensure that students are connected with resources on campus.
Emily has shown her compassion and warmth by continuing to stay in contact with students from her Frosh teams throughout the academic year. Emily understands that her role as a Frosh Leader is continuous even after Frosh Week is over. Jessica has been actively involved within residence both as a volunteer and as a student staff. She has multiple years’ experience volunteering as a Residents’ Council Executive including VP Athletics and Wellness and council President. Beyond this, Jessica has also been a committed Residence Office Assistant at the Townhouse Residence Complex. Across all of these roles, Jessica has grown in her leadership and has helped to develop future leaders within the residence community.
As Residents’ Council Executive, Jessica was nominated by her peers to take on the responsibility of advocating for their interests, decision making on their behalf, and planning social programming. As Residents’ Council President, Jessica worked alongside Residence Life Management Staff to provide student input on department policy updates and other key decisions. In both of these roles, Jessica showed her capacity for putting community development first.

Kiethen is an active volunteer with Office of Aboriginal Initiatives. He volunteers for the Peer2Peer mentorship programs as well as for annual events and activities such as the Annual Welcome Powwow, Round Dance, Debwendizon, and Annual Leadership conference. He was also a Science Camp Counselor for youth with the Aboriginal Summer Education Programs.
Kiethen builds campus community by being an active part of that community. His participation in events has helped to encourage other less outgoing students to get involved. Kiethen’s inclusive sense of humour and extremely positive attitude brings a positive atmosphere to the student space in the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives. He has come to be known as a pillar in the student lounge, sought out by his peers for his advice.
He is a very positive ambassador and strong role model for other students. He is always willing to volunteer at a moment’s notice and works to encourage student participation in various programming on campus. Beyond this, Keithen also encourages cultural awareness in his peers. He works to keep Cree language strong through volunteering his time to speak to other Cree speaking students looking for language support.
Originally from Kasechewan, Ontario. Kiethen began his degree at Nipissing in the Aboriginal Advantage Program, earning himself a Student Achievement Award at the end of the program. After completing his degree program, Keithen plans to pursue post-graduate education.

Since beginning her degree with Nipissing, Jenna has been actively involved with the Nipissing University Business Club to help build a community among Business students. Through her hard work and dedication, the club has grown to have more of a presence, regularly hosting events.
Jenna has shown leadership in uniting students through the Business club. She helped organize the A Future in Business event on campus, which entailed reaching out to local businesses/organizations and alumni to attend to give advice on resume techniques and plans for after graduation. This event provided Business students with a great networking opportunity while simultaneously engaging alumni and local partners.
Jenna has also volunteered to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research at both the NUSU Shine Gala and Shinerama baseball tournament. Beyond this, she participated in the Big Brother/Big Sister gift wrap, the Nipissing University Open House tours, and is currently volunteering her time to help organize NUSU’s Wellness Week.

Luke is a tireless worker passionately striving to make the community a better place. He volunteers in key positions around the city including helping low-income families in North Bay become homeowners with Project HOAP (Home Ownership Affordability Partnership), helping sponsor a refugee family in North Bay, and helping manage and lead a condominium corporation. Beyond this, Luke has also been published in the Bay Today speaking about First Nations living conditions and reconciliation. Luke is also a contributor to The Shield a military newspaper.
With the help of Luke’s hard work and dedication, two families have achieved their dream of home ownership with Project HOAP and one refugee family has been welcomed to Canada. Luke continues to work to support the refugee family as they become more self-sufficient and adjust to life within our community. In his role as board member for the condominium corporation, Luke works to ensure that the resources are well managed and communication flows smoothly. Luke shows leadership in each of these roles through his compassion for others.

Jessica is a dedicated student who has successfully balanced her academic work with important community involvement. Jessica’s contributions to the community are significant and range from caring for the elderly to hosting an international student. She also has considerable experience volunteering for the Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre.
Jessica completed an extensive, two-month training program on crisis-intervention and on subjects such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and violence against women. This training taught strategies such as coping, grounding and how to provide support. She also volunteered regularly with Amelia Rising in the clothing bank, where she interacted with victims and survivors of sexual assault.
Beyond this, Jessica participated in the Women on the Inside Initiative, where volunteers enter the local North Bay prison to provide services and activities for women. Lastly, Jessica has volunteered at Amelia Rising Sexual Assault Centre booth which involved educating the public about sexual violence, while also being available to provide support for victims.
Jessica is a superb example of a person who uses her education to help improve the lives of marginalized populations. Jessica is an intelligent, industrious, and academically capable student. She is passionate about justice issues relating to sexual violence and has already proven her commitment to giving back to the community.

Berlinda is in the Bachelor of Education, Junior/Intermediate divisions with a teaching subject in English.
Berlinda has been an active volunteer on campus with the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives throughout her degrees. She has been a volunteer for Wiidooktaadwin Mentorship Initiatives, the Peer2Peer Mentorship Program, and Biidaaban Mentorship programs. Beyond this, Berlinda has volunteered her time with beading workshops, sharing circles, smudges, moccasin workshops and homework sessions. She was also a Camp Counsellor with the Aboriginal Summer Programs.
As part of her Biidaaban Community Service Learning, Berlinda developed a Circle of Caring program for elementary school classes in partnership with the non-profit organization COPA (Ontario Centre for Prevention of Aggression). Circle of Caring is an anti-bullying initiative whereby community members and local professionals visit elementary school classrooms for story-telling and teachings about being kind. During this program, children also had the opportunity to build friendships using The Friendship Salad Kit developed by Berlinda.
Berlinda also authored a children’s book entitled The Boy with the Braid. The purpose of this book was to help build understanding among children about the cultural significance of indigenous people having long hair and braids.
Berlinda is inclusive of everyone. She makes sure that everyone feels like they belong. She is a strong advocate of education and is a natural teacher who goes out her way to share her experiences, herself, and her culture with others.

Paige is in the Masters of Environmental Studies.
Paige has been incredibly dedicated to cultural revitalization projects with community organizations in North Bay and the surrounding region, including in her home community of Dokis First Nation.
Some of her service activities include: Chairperson of the Dokis First Nation Cultural Committee, singing for community gatherings on and off campus, serving as a guest speaker for several workshops on cultural revitalization at the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre and in local primary schools, and facilitating workshops for regalia making, powwow dancing, and beading.
Her work on cultural revitalization is directly related to her Masters Thesis entitled Land Based Practices: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, Decolonization. Paige’s work to protect the water led her to serve as a Water Protector at Standing Rock North Dakota, as a community delegate from Dokis First Nation.
Paige’s community service and leadership is also oriented toward facilitating opportunities for Indigenous youth, including serving as a Wiidookaadwin Aboriginal Mentor for the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives.
As the Chairperson of the Dokis First Nation Cultural Committee, Paige not only organizes an annual powwow but this year she worked to secure $10,000 in funding to support community infrastructure at the powwow grounds.
Paige’s dedication to her community and her foundation in Anishinaabe teachings make her an effective and considerate leader.

Laura is in the Bachelor of Education, Primary/Junior divisions.
Laura took initiative to reach out to Dr. Olmstead, Associate Dean of the Schulich School of Education to offer feedback about the new consecutive education program, including some solid recommendations for further enhancing the student experience. This included the development of a questionnaire, the organization of a large group feedback session (which she led), and the development of a process for electing representatives for the new Teacher Candidate Advisory Council (now in its first year of operation). Laura was instrumental in engaging her peers in becoming actively involved in student government as a means to establish ongoing and open lines of communications between students, faculty, and administration.
The teacher candidate advisory council would not exist without Laura’s leadership. She has definitely had an impact on both years of the new consecutive program, as well as the final three years of the previous concurrent education program.
Off campus, Laura volunteers as a Girl Guide Sparks Leader and a Camp Counsellor. In these roles, she has facilitated weekly meetings, planned fundraising initiatives, encouraged teamwork and self-confidence among youth, and gained valuable experience in preparation for her future teaching career. Laura has provided exceptional leadership and has been an excellent role model for the children she has helped over the last several years in these roles.
Laura is community-oriented, empathetic, kind and caring. She will make a great teacher!

Lisa has been involved in multiple research projects where she has worked to: conserve monarch butterfly populations, restore declining oak forests in Ontario, and monitor the health of moose populations and declining forests in western Newfoundland.
Her research in Newfoundland began as a course-related service-learning project, which was elevated to a thesis project in her fourth year and led to a long-term research collaboration among Nipissing University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Parks Canada.
Lisa has been an excellent ambassador for the Biology Department and for Nipissing University.
Bachelor of Science, Honours – Biology
Andrew is an outstanding student. He has held the Nipissing University President’s Scholarship in each year of his undergraduate studies, with a 95% overall GPA.
Andrew balances studying, researching, and coordinating events for his fellow students through his roles as volunteer tutor, laboratory teaching assistant, Professional Internship Program Participant, and President of the Biology Society.
Andrew arranged a “Thesis Night” to allow students to learn about developing an honours thesis from faculty and peers. He also set up a partnership with Princeton Review to hold a practice Medical Schools Admission Test in order to help prepare students for the test.
Andrew is a highly intelligent, mature, and generous individual. He has a bright future and will bring great credit to Nipissing.
Bachelor of Science, Honours - Mathematics
Paul has been a research assistant in Mathematics for the last three years, and is pursuing honours research this term. He has worked on two projects in advanced mathematics, using his skills in computer science and math to study problems in topology.
Paul has written and developed his own software programs that will benefit future student researchers and consistently aims to achieve something better and more complete than what is asked for.
His abilities in math and computer science are far advanced among his peers, but he remains graciously humble and unassuming, while maintaining high standards for himself.
Bachelor of Business Administration – Marketing
Gillian is an active classroom contributor, a leader in group settings, and an exemplary member of the School of Business. She has earned the respect of colleagues and faculty in her roles as: student, teaching assistant, iLead participant, and community volunteer.
Gillian’s volunteer work with the Huntsville Festival of Arts inspired two iLead Field Placements where she contributed sound strategic plans to an organization in need. Her work earned her the honour of becoming the youngest member of the Board of Directors in the history of this organization.
Gillian is a bright, ambitious, intelligent individual who will continue to proudly represent Nipissing University far beyond graduation.

Adam is a committed researcher who has contributed to the success of two major research projects in the lab. He has presented work at the Undergraduate Research Conference twice and has worked to guide, motivate, and train other lab members in his role as a Research Assistant.
Adam is also extensively involved in Nipissing University and North Bay organizations as a: Student Recruitment Tour Guide, Peer Tutor, Psychology Society member, White Ribbon Campaign co-President, and board member of the Fundraising & Community Outreach for Amelia Rising.
Adam demonstrates a belief in a high-level of achievement while creating a positive, supportive, and healthy community.
Master of Education
Jessica noticed there was a need for a greater sense of community and belonging among online Master of Education students. In response, she founded the Education Graduate Students group, and began facilitating bi-weekly meetings for students both on and off campus.
Jessica organized the content of meetings, facilitated academic discussion and research collaboration, and ensured that distance students were able to participate in meetings via video conferencing.
Thanks to her initiative and dedication, Masters of Education students now have an active academic support group dedicated to building relationships, and encouraging academic success.
Bachelor of Science, Honours - Environment and Physical Geography
Jasmine has been a volunteer, a research assistant, and now an honours thesis student with Nipissing University’s Integrative Watershed Research Centre.
Jasmine has contributed to several community-based research projects in partnership with the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority.
Her research on the Chippewa Creek watershed has helped us to understand the quality and movement of our local watersheds and how we can manage our watersheds for long term sustainability.
Jasmine has proven to be a leader with a local impact.
Marianne Vander Dussen
Master of Education
Marianne is an exceptional student, researcher, mentor and leader. She has acted as a volunteer teaching assistant, guest lecturer in multiple classes, and has been a mentor for teacher candidates for the last three years.
Marianne mentors Teacher Candidates who are experiencing difficulties in their practicum placements. The guidance she provides them is exemplary and very much appreciated by those she works with.
Her thesis research entitled “Narrative Pathways to Character, Empathy and Belonging,” is exceptional and has been well received by our Teacher Candidates.

Autumn has is engaged in oral history research that promises to reshape our understanding of the relationships between indigenous people and major cultural and political institutions.?
Her study entitled “Selling Ourselves” is a critical look at the experiences of indigenous peoples working as costumed interpreters at the heritage site Ste-Marie-among-the-Hurons.
This research has been presented internationally at a conference in Chile, provincially to the Union of Ontario Indians, and written about locally in the Anishinabek News.?
She is also a leader in the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives: helping other students with their work, suggesting directions for their research, and helping indigenous students navigate academia. In powerful ways, she builds bridges between people.?
Bachelor of Education, Intermediate Senior divisions – Mathematics & Physics
Jacob is in the Bachelor of Education, Intermediate Senior divisions with teaching subjects in Mathematics and Physics.
Jacob has been a Research Assistant, Frosh Leader, Frosh Coordinator, NUSU Crew member, Math Club co-organizer, and Math Circles volunteer.
Jacob is committed to helping students both on campus and in the community. He has led Match Circles, a volunteer program that hosts children from local schools at Nipissing on weekends for math enrichment activities. Here on campus, Jacob has impacted students through introducing important conversations about the topic of consent into Frosh week programming.
In all of his roles, Jacob has demonstrated effective leadership in his ability to talk to anyone with kindness, empathy, and respect.

Yannick has contributed to the campus as President of the Criminal Justice Student Association, NUSU Student Council member, and as the Secretary of the Criminal Justice Honours Society: Alpha Phi Sigma.
Yannick has worked to build student-faculty relationships, plan guest speakers, host fundraising events, and promote awareness of important issues like domestic sex trafficking in Canada.
His hardworking, ambitious, and welcoming personality has contributed to his success in all of his roles. His infectious spirit has influenced his peers to get involved.

Madison was a Frosh leader for the 2014/2015 academic year, as well as a member of the Nipissing University Board of Directors before she was elected to her current role as the Vice President External for the student union.
Madison is responsible for leading a number of campaigns on and off campus including: Shinerama, It’s No Secret, Movember, No More Stolen Sisters, No Means No, Shine Gala, and more.
She has raised an incredible amount of money and awareness for these causes and has promoted a strong sense of pride on-campus.
She is dedicated to improving student life and she works hard to ensure that students always feel welcome and respected on campus.
Ruth Cortez Alvarez

Ruth is a Nipissing University Student Union representative at the Muskoka campus, and has been a volunteer with Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services for the past two years.
She has coordinated events, rallied community volunteers, and improved awareness about social justice issues like violence against women. Ruth has also raised awareness of the challenges faced by immigrants to Canada.
Ruth is honest, forthright, generous and reliable. She is always there to support her peers in any way she can. It is through these attributes she has gained the trust and respect of many students around her.

Markus is an incredibly ambitious young man with a love and enthusiasm for Nipissing University and its student Alumni.
As Nipissing University Student Alumni President, Markus initiated a fundraising campaign to update the Owl’s Nest, increased NUSA’s volunteer presence on campus and in the community, and participated in further philanthropy.
Markus is always looking for new opportunities to enhance student involvement and engagement within the university. His drive has been influential in creating new relationships with community partners.
He has a keen attention to detail that is evident when leading a project or volunteer opportunity. He smart, kind, and treats everyone with respect and integrity.

Nicole has leadership experience as Match Circles co-Lead and as the Math Club President.
For Math Circles, she worked with students from the community to provide math enrichment opportunities here on campus on weekends.
As President of the Math Club, Nicole brought students from all years of study together for events, and helped to initiate further involvement in the Math Club and Math Circles programs.
Through her efforts, she has helped to establish a model for which both programs can grow and continue to succeed for years to come.
Bachelor of Arts, Honours – Social Welfare and Social Development
As a member of the Sexual Violence Response Education and Prevention Committee, Samantha helped to develop a new policy to address sexual violence on campus.
Samantha is a student leader with a vision that includes having a safe campus environment free of gender-based violence. She has helped to facilitate Bringing in the Bystander workshops, planned and implemented educational events for students, and organized a bra and feminine hygiene product drive for the women’s shelter.
Samantha does not shy away from difficult conversations. Instead, she thoughtfully and wholeheartedly launches into them, bringing peers along with her. She is trustworthy, empathetic, and wonderful role model for other students.
Bachelor of Science – Nursing
Brianne has inspired many with her love of dance and passion for leadership through her roles in the Nipissing and Canadore Dance Club, Relay for Life Committee, Nipissing University Student Alumni, and AskME team.
Brianne has been involved on campus and in the community through volunteering at home basketball games, at Homecoming, for the North Bay Christmas Walk, with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and for Jack.org events.
Brianne is an outgoing and responsible leader who encourages others to pursue what they love. She balances a heavy course load while still finding time to volunteer, and plan dance club practices and recitals.

Mark was a member of the Frosh Week Awareness Team this year, providing First Aid, CPR and awareness to anyone who needed it. Mark has also worked with Student Accessibility Services as a mentor and student worker. In these roles, he has helped to prepare assistive technology and provide alternate format textbooks for students. Mark is also working on preparing a social media strategy for the department.
Mark is compassionate and insightful. His vision is to create a campus that grows more tolerant and accepting by the day.
Mark always goes above and beyond the requirements of his positions and is always there to help others.
Bachelor of Arts, Honours – Gender Equality and Social Justice
Mary has enhanced campus culture through her work as a Residence Don. In addition to her roles in mediation, academic and emotional support, and emergency on-call staffing, Mary has also organized an anti-Islamophobia campaign with a fellow student.
As part of the campaign, a student’s hijabs were displayed in the front foyer of residence, and together Mary and her colleague encouraged others to try them on, and ask questions as part of a larger campaign against Islamophobia.
Mary is a very friendly, caring and empathetic person. She strives to find out how her students are doing on a daily basis, and she works for inclusion and acceptance in the residence community.
Bachelor of Physical and Health Education
Sean has been a Nipissing university Student Athletic Centre Intermural Coordinator for the last three years.
In this role, Sean continually ensured proper refereeing, scorekeeping, and registration in order to create a safe, equitable, and inclusive environment for students to participate in.
Sean has improved the platform for intramurals by creating more accountable and standardized processes for employee management as well as improved online functioning for registration and participant notification.
As a result of Sean’s work to improve the effectiveness of the intramural program, there are more intramurals offered, more people participate, and there is a noticeable improved and positive culture at each game.

Nicole has devoted much time and commitment within the community of North Bay as co-leader for NU Reads program, a free literacy-based program for children aged 4-12 held at the North Bay Public Library.
Nicole planned meaningful literacy learning activities for children in the community, and pairing children with fellow education classmates to create individualized learning opportunities.
Under Nicole’s co-leadership, NU Reads has grown in scope and attendance. Nicole not only modeled strategies for teaching literacy to her fellow colleagues, but also demonstrated a strong understanding of ways to work with children in the junior and intermediate grades.
Nicole’s creative ideas and outgoing nature contributed to the program’s week-to-week success.

Eliza has five years of experience as a Youth Mentor for Why Not Youth Centres, an organization geared towards supporting at-risk and street youth.
Eliza found simple yet powerful ways to engage and empower youth in her role as a mentor. She supervised placements, and has coordinated numerous events, fundraisers and activities. She has contributed significantly to enhancing the community atmosphere at Why Not Youth Centres.
Eliza has a remarkably positive attitude that impacts every setting she encounters. She has made young people who are rarely positively acknowledged feel loved, celebrated, and cared for. Eliza has had, and will continue to have, a big impact on the lives of many youth.

Megan has devoted much time and commitment within the community of North Bay, both as a volunteer Reading Mentor and co-leader of NU Reads, a free literacy-based program for children aged 4-12 held at the North Bay Public Library.

Andrew is an active volunteer with many different community organizations including: The Nipissing Association for Disabled youth, The Gathering Place, and the North Bay Regional Health Centre. Andrew initiated a fundraising project involving Bachelor of Science Nursing students in 2012, for cancer care at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
Andrew’s vision for his cancer fundraiser was to raise $10,000 before graduating in 2016 to help offset the cost of cancer treating equipment. He demonstrated leadership among fellow nursing students as he rallied them in bake sales, draws, and other fundraising activities, and inspired them to help their hospital.
Through his fundraising efforts, and donations from the community, Andrew was able to meet his $10,000 goal and contribute to the purchase of cancer-treating equipment.
Kerry Lynn Peltier
Bachelor of Arts – Social Welfare and Social Development
Kerry Lynn has been a leader and role model for her peers ever since she began in the Aboriginal Advantage Program in 2011.
As part of the Aboriginal Student Council, Kerry helped to promote upcoming cultural events to students such as the Round Dance at Nbisiing Secondary School and the Annual Powwow here at the university.
As a mentor with the Wiidooktaadwin Mentorship Program, Kerry mentored high school students at Widdifield and Chippewa Secondary schools in cultural based projects and leadership activities.
She is a role model for her peers as she talks about her positive life experiences and healthy lifestyle. She empowers others to participate in and celebrate their culture.
